Council Tax Banding reduction

I would be interested in knowing if anyone has succeeded in Scotland. I applied about a year ago to my council and they said: "you need to wait until the house is sold or changes hands" hmmm!!
I reckon the banding is 2 levels too high. They were also charging for sewage and we have a septic tank..they refunded that.
Any ideas anyone?0 -

I had the valuer out. Sher measured up and thought from that info I should be in a lower band. I was really excited. Then I got a letter to say after looking at what other properties were valued at when the house was built they have decided it is correct
I wish she has not said anything when she came round. I went and treated myself to an expensive pair of boots thinking I was in for a refund.0 -
Hmm nice site but wondering if I can appeal, don't want it to increase?
My current tax band is C with an effective date of 27/8/1999 which is when it was last sold before I moved in in 2003. The valuation list of 1993 puts it as Band B (historic).
Now I know the property was extended back in 1992 so maybe the current band is correct and I can't appeal, any advice as don't want to appeal and it to go up anymore.0 -
It sounds as if the original banding was B, then, as a result of the extension and following the sale of the property the band was put up to a C. There are limited rights of appeal - six months from when you bought the property or from when the banding was increased. It sounds as if you will not have a valid appeal - you can write to them however and they will check the banding for you. Just remember - bands can go up as well as down and the valuation officer has a duty to correct the band if it is incorrect.
You may be in a higher band than similar properties in your road simply because of the extension, if others have been extended they could still be in a lower band simply because the house has not yet been sold on. A council tax revaluation would get rid of these anomolies and start everyone off on a fair footing again.0 -
Thanks for the advice, not sure i'll bother then as don't want it to go up anymore.0

Although you pay council tax in Scotland it looks as though the government are not prepared to give you the same service as tax payers in England and Wales as this is all the site search function covers!!A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.
