  • I find it too basic, this is the sort of stuff that I learnt while I was living at home, looking over grandma's shoulders... I bought is a present for a friend of mine who always says she can't cook and has to buy ready meals or starve... She has so far cooked two meals, that is more than she has done since I know her... I guess it helped that she saw the program too, got her a bit motivated...

Can anyone tell me if the Ministry of Food book is worth buying?
I am a pretty good cook, and have a LARGE collection of cook books already :rotfl:
But keep hearing really good things about it? I have Jamie's Dinners, Italy and At home. I did buy "cook with Jamie" but it was TOO basic for me-I had all the recipes, so gave it to a friend who doesn't cook much (Pass it on :D)

I tend to use Nigel Slater a lot, and Rick Stein too.

So would I find the new one a bit simple? Am hoping its £10 in store at WHSmith, then with voucher makes it £5? Is it worth that much

I bought this book for my son for christmas. He has his own flat now. It was only £8.99 at Waterstones, don't know if that was only for the run up to christmas though.

I think it is more for a beginner, but it is a nice book. I would not have paid more than £10 for it.

Try borrowing it from the library first ;)

Always, for any book - then if it's a "keeper" buy one! :D

Find your local cheapo bookstore ad buy some books there.

Definitly more food inspiration in 20 x £1 cheapo books than 1x £20 book.

Once you have an idea, google is your friend!

Jamie is starting to get annoying. He has a magazine now.....

    This is my favourite cookbook.

Agreeing with a couple of other posts. If you have 'Cook With Jamie' and find that too basic, I don't think Ministry is a great one for you. I have both out from the library right now and I far prefer 'Cook' even though I'm not a great or experienced cook.
  • Rick Steins Meditteranean is much better:j

I got it and don't think it's too basic at all - i can cook a lot of things from scratch but his versions are different than how i do them,

He also has recipes for making your own curry paste.

All the recipes are pretty simple and not too time taking.
It's not paranoia if they really are after you.

I think this is what we mean by basic, the recipes are good, but if the OP has other cookbooks and is a competent cook then this is not for him, only in my opinion, but worth a try from the library first. However if you like cookbooks to read then it is a nice one. I love reading my recipe books.
  • From reading your posts you'll probably find it too basic for yourself. I have a copy and found it to be ok. It gave me a couple of good basic recipes to get my head around as well as some ones that are now adapted to make them my own. (my new years challenge last year was to learn to cook more from scratch to save money and eat more healthily so cooking books and magazine are a mini obsession for me!) :-)
