Are we as a society basically broken?

in my view there are no problems in our society that couldn't be solved by having a three strikes system with boltgun justice at the end of it.0

Is that really the case on the whole? In another thread today I commented that the kind of anti-social, immoral and unintelligent behaviour being discussed there represented the rule in our society rather than the exception... Thats just a suspicion though. In my personal experience, like tomstickland, most people I encounter are generally decent. My neighbours are all lovely people... should I be counting myself extremely lucky for this 'rarity'?
Quite. We're all lovely on here, aren't we? (Well, most of the time?

What are the facts then?
This post mentions house prices - fact.
My post is hurried and dis-jointed - fact
Money is the root of all evil...
There are numerous problems and in answer to the OP, this country has been broken for a good few years. The first stage in the breakdown is of course caused by broken families and the reliance on friendship, which in turn leads to peer pressure. This peer pressure leads onto alcohol abuse, drug abuse, gambling, unprotected sex, crime, etc...
It is actually a useful and very interesting post! Why?
I live in Camden Town, and houses on my road, which is close to the market go for £400,000+ (maybe not for much longer). The street itself is very nice, but we are surrounded by drug dealers and criminals.
It is quite pathetic that this area is highly desirable and a clear example of house prices being overpriced.
A loss of faith, I believe, has a very large influence on society today, as the majority have turned their backs on this in favour of science. The fundamentals of religion itself are crucial to society and rather than focusing on differences, the major religions of this world should focus on similarities. Religion has attempted to teach mankind how to live in harmony and has helped me to stay on the straight and narrow.
The influence from Brussels has caused a number of problems; the biggest has to be the issue of Human Rights. Criminals and young hooligans are being protected by this and good hard-working citizens are being neglected, nay, kicked in the teeth by these bureaucrats. These fat cats do not even have to run for re-election, where is the democracy in that?
I am sure the majority will disagree, but I have a very strong feeling that the pound will fall and replaced by the Euro in the next ten years. If this does happen, then the hard working people of this once great nation will be robbed once again.
This post is filled with negativity, but I know that while the situation in this country WILL become far worse, it should help to make this nation stronger and greater than before (if we can stay away from the Euro)…0 -

It'a the food we eat. It's actually all Tesco etc 's fault.simpywimpy wrote: »It is difficult to know what the answer is to this downward trend in standards and I agree, that reading the news reports is depressing.
The trouble is, if we don't find the answer we are just accentuating the problem as the new generation arrive with no parenting skills, poor social skills and pass exactly that on to their own children. You can imagine the trend created. Throwing money at it and them is not the answer.
Later tonight I will write about an experiment that was written about in the latest Felicity Lawrence book.
No,...... I am not Ms Cranky.....but, trust me...it's the modern day processed diet.
Even for those that THINK they eat 'healthy' stuff...it's all mucked about with, how it's grown, transported, picked too early bla bla.....
Sorry working my way through the thread and quoting as I go......0 -
Credit Crunch...snappy, to the point, makes your mouth a funny shape when you say it. Am designing a range this week entitled....The Credit Crunch Multiway Selection. The American "Wall Street/Main Street" could be transposed as "High Street" here. Or perhaps the "Square Mile" will affect the "Town Square".
Journalists love catchy slogans. The dot-com crash, the Russian defaults, the Asian debt crisis all seemed too remote to affect ordinary people's sentiment (though initially at least were thought to possibly bring the West into recession). "Credit crunch" is short, snappy and sufficiently vague that it can worry anyone - we all need credit, if not for ourselves then our employers need it.
And I don't make sweets or chocs....0 -
My OH is the worst for this. Happened on the St our shop is in.....EVERY bloke hid...every single one.....so who went to defend the girl being attacked?....yup.. my OH.Max_Headroom wrote: »Somebody once said to me, never ever intervene between an arguing couple, even if it is getting physical, as like as not you'll just end up with them both turning on you.
I genuinely don't know what I'd do if I saw a gang attacking someone (beyond phoning the police), easy to sit an hypothersise, different again when it's actually happening in fornt of you and you have to make the snap judgement.
Then all the blokes (about 10 of them) stood around watching as my OH got hit by some crazed, jealous, off his head lunatic...who was attacking his GF...then diverted his aggression to OH. 'Ooooh wait for the police...'
They turned up 30 mins later.
We had vippy tckts for Fat Boy slim this weekend....me..sober....very sober.
Hysterical, sobbing girls trying to get into the vip space...everyone ignored them.......go away..this is vip-land....go back down you non vippy person....
So OH and I spent part of the evening hauling drunk, drug crazed, hysterical youngsters (the Gloucester type out of their depth) into vip area....to give them breathing space.
Makes me glad I don't get out and about as much as I'd like to.0
