Are we as a society basically broken?

To return the subject matter back to its inter-relationship with the economy, one can hope that ensuing financial problems may help to resolve some of these social ills, as people rediscover the value of thrift, hard work etc - more of the WWII spirit.
I hope?
Yes please, but none of the World War bit !Control is an illusion, chaos is the reality. A successful warrior dances with chaos, and success means simply that one is still alive.0 -

I Agree, but I was not around then.;)

Being a natural optimist, I would ordinarily respond to this with a confident 'Yes! Course thats how it will be' ... lately though, I'm finding myself suspecting people are going to sway the other way and priorities will be looking out for #10 -

And where exactly will these degenerates find jobs? Or will NEW LABOUR create a job for them?
By the way, "ensuing financial problems" do not resolve social ills: it CREATES them!
Everyone knows that crime rises in times of poverty...............that should be obvious to you!
You may crave for Dickensian days where people were sent to the workhouse for peanuts - but times haved moved on rather................:p0 -
Good thread but wondering what it has to do with house prices

more of a discussion time subject maybe?
Actually I was wondering the same thing?
I have never turned the other cheek but watching this on the news this afternoon, I remember the time there was a fight on the train. I shrunk down on my seat as I have 2 children at home and ignored the situation. I felt awful afterwards but also remember the time I intervened when some young woman was having a go at an old lady on the bus and I ended up having an almighty row with this woman and we both had to get off the bus!! Even though I was trying to save the old lady. Trouble was the girl had two mates with her and I was on my own with a baby in a buggy. It could have turned very very nasty.
Also when my DH intervened once on a bloke beating his GF up, the woman jumped on DH back and tried to scratch his eyes out.
Are we broken. Yes.0 -

It's an interesting theory and I really do hope you are right. Maybe this financial meltdown is in fact socially just what's needed.
I fear however that much of societies ills is down to parenting breakdown, and it's hard to know how the underclass of badly parented bad parents will manage to bring up anything other than the next generation of bad kids.
And remember, they are the ones doing the most breeding...Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Perhaps some of us round here who consider ourselves to be moral, motivated, model citizens should stop pontificating and perhaps try and get involved and make a difference in a more hands-on way?
Quality post, Phirefly :TOh come on, don't be silly.
It's the internet - it's not real!0 -

.
Somebody once said to me, never ever intervene between an arguing couple, even if it is getting physical, as like as not you'll just end up with them both turning on you.
I genuinely don't know what I'd do if I saw a gang attacking someone (beyond phoning the police), easy to sit an hypothersise, different again when it's actually happening in fornt of you and you have to make the snap judgement.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I imagine that all of the people who post on here are pretty much working/parents/normal decent people who sit on their pcs of an evening because it's too expensive to go out to a pub (if you can find one anymore) and put the world to rights.
The people who carry out this sort of thuggery don't read forums like this. They are too busy finding out where to score drugs and running wild in public. They should make some threads on here compulsory reading for anyone in senior school I think.
I will not walk down our high street anymore on a Saturday night unless I am flanked with a group of friends. Never just me & DH. It's just not worth it. Everyone wants to row.
No far safer to come on here with a glarsh of wine and have a cyber fight;)0 -

Has Mr Phirefly got another MSE username I don't know about? You sound just like him... The other day when some utterly heinous R&B slow-jamz-get-filthy-wit-ma-b*tches compilation was being advertised, he came out with an alltime classic - "oh great thats just what we need - ANOTHER soundtrack for the underclasses to procreate to. Should be banned"
The ironic thing is, he and I who would (naturally) make supreme parents and produce gifted and wonderous offspring with our superior genes are delaying that stage of our lives....0
