I found a really cool new garage in Croydon, LOT MOT Centre.
They have a No Pass, No Fee policy and they are an unbiased mot centre.

It's always the same old thing, let's slate all the garages that do mots and repairs because they all fail cars because they want the work, what a load of piffle. Yes I will admit that there maybe the odd one or two that do it, but most of us hard working garages don't. I have been doing mots for 8 years now and I don't even fail them if a bulb is out, I just simply replace it for them, I will always advise if I think something is of safety concern and leave it up to the customer to decide. I have been offering my mots at 29.99 since we opened and now you all say because it's cut price I am doing it so I can fail the car for the work, this is almost slander, I also offer a free mot with a full service is this wrong too, maybe i should just quit and let my customers pay full price round the corner. Please everyone, don't think we are all the same, I do cut price mots because I think 55 pounds is a lot to pay and I like my customers to always come back. I also find it hard to believe that council mot stations can pass a 10 to 12 year old car with no failures, knowing how the council work anyway most of theses people are driving around in dangerous cars. A twelve year old Nissan micra with no rust on the front or sills!!!!! Really !!! That one must have been kept in a garage all it's life and done about 2000 miles. Please double check after it's been to a council centre just to make sure your not driving around in a death trap. Remember, everyone is driving around in a 70 mph missile that could kill. I don't want any of my customers feeling that responsibility.0

Always beware of reduced rates or even free MOTs. The garage will invariably find a "fault" and claim something requires to be replced.
I found out recently that many local council depots can carry out MOTs. They're more likely to give you an impartial test because they don't sell parts and can't make any money by saying your car fails on any given item.
You'll pay the full price for the test but it's worth remembering and avoid the garage trying to sell you brakes, shockers etc and many other components that are difficult to check.
Knowing how the council work I doubt they could spot a faulty item on their own, it needs at least ten of them and even then they still wouldn't notice a blown sidelight bulb0 -

It is frustrating but unfortunately a lot of folk do base their opinion on an mot station depending if their car passed or not.
Safety appears a secondary concern these days, which is a shame for the good testing stations out there.
In my experience council stations are some of the worst for delivering an inadequate test.0 -

Isn't this the garage that was on that BBC Watchdog programme? I wouldn't go near them personally.0 -

When you say "the council" which one are you referring to? Do they really have ten testers doing one MOT? Have they really passed vehicles with non working lights? Have you reported this to the Dept. Of Transport? Why don't you identify this council and give us some proof of your statement.
Or, are you just posting unsubstantiated assertions with no basis in actual fact.
I have used my local council test centre for the last 12 years and the staff there are helpful and efficient.0 -
I use my local back street indy garage.
He doesn't do MOT'S but takes the car a few miles away.
2002 saxo passed for £45 on monday for second year running so no collusion in any way.
I wonder whether now to get rid with a fresh mot but having said that it starts, stops, and goes. I could spend £2000 and end up with something far worse.
A few advisories including "slight free pay in steering" which has come up for the last 4 MOT'S but yet to be failed.
A little bit of corrosion on sub frame turned up for the first time "but not structurally weakened".0 -
Does anyone know the Brent council MOT centre if there is one?0
