    Gas
    Click 5 Old = £819
    Click 5 New = £1142 (39%)
    Click 6 = £1101 (34.5%)

    Electricity
    Click 5 Old = £560
    Click 5 New = £745 (33%)
    Click 6 = £672 (20.1%)

The most disgraceful thing about this situation is there will no doubt be many Click 5 customers unaware that they can make a saving by switching to Click 6.

It something like the scandal when Banks 'quietly' reduced the interest rates on savings accounts so some elderly people found they were earning 0.1% interest on their life savings.

I suppose that the majority of those on an internet account will be more 'switched on' than those who are blissfully remaining on Standard tariff with the 'Gas Board', and thus might realise there are savings to be made.

It will be interesting to see in their formal notifcation of price rise letter, if BG mention Click 6.

The only reason I can see for remaining on Click 5 is if you are in the switching process and can revert to the old tariff.

What do you mean by that? I am currently in the process of switching into Click 5, are you saying its still possible to switch into the old rates. I'd assumed that I would be automatically put on the new rates. Or do you mean switching out of click 5?

Yes switching out of Click 5.

If you are on Click 5 and decide to change to another company, provided you notify BG within 10 days you will revert back to the original rates.

Should you decide to stay with BG you have no reason not to move to Click 6.
  • Energy Helpline have added Click 6 within the last few hours so will also be based on the new Click 5 rates.

For me quoting an annual cost of 395 ( little gas gets used;), I know people will say thats not the best method of getting a comparison, its the method I always use. ;) ) Energy Helpline says that Click 6 by monthly direct debit will be cheaper than Click 5 by 64.00 a year.
Next is Npower, 40.00 a year more than Click 6, Click 6 Quarterly billing/Direct Debit comes out at 24.00 a year cheaper than Click 5. Scottish Power No Standing Charge/Monthly Direct Debit is shown as 100.00 more than Click 6 and 35.00 more than Click 5.

Standby for SP to launch a new online tariff. :rotfl:
  • If the regulator had any molars at all he would put a stop to this sort of practice!! Constantly changing the Click Energy products so that many people remain on the more expensive existing one and don't get to know about the 'new' one can only be described as despicable and morally bankrupt (ooohhh, there I go again). Is there anyone out there who can prove what I am saying is bunkum?

Its a game that all the energy companies play, you are correct that its morally wrong that people paying by the same payment method and managing their accounts online should be paying different prices within the same energy company.
  • Can any BG employee give me an acceptable, moral reason why the Click Energy products are superceeded at all? All I can genuinely think of is it's yet another cynical way of getting existing, loyal customers to effectively subsidise the ensnaring of new customers with the shiny new Click product. Why don't BG, for instance, EMAIL (they don't even have to ruddy write a letter!) ALL Click 1-5 punters and tell them they really should transfer to Click 6??

In fact the people on click 1 - 4 were until very recently at a level below the click 5 product. This changed with the latest price increase. At the moment there is no reason to be on anything but click 6 and as this is only marginally cheaper then get off it and find a fixed rate tariff.

As for people who dont change tariff, this is something pretty industry standard and i agree that its wrong to charge more for someone who's on click 1 - 5 than someone whos on click 6.

This is one of those things where a supplier knows it can save you money but willfully chooses not to, there are two more good examples. There are a lot of customers with BG, nPower and i'm sure the other suppliers who are registered for paperless billing but DONT get a click style rate. They pay more money for exactly the same service. Odd isn't it? Another interesting thing suppliers do is to do with economy 7. As a supplier we certainly have the knowledge to proactivelly recognise people who are on economy 7 and shouldn't be and take them off it. Its no paperwork, no bother, just the click of a button. We dont.

The industry as a whole in the same way as the mobile telephone industry has a fast moving tariff type and really only uses its best tariff's as retention and new business tools. They do not and will not proactivelly put people on the best tariff for them and I can really think of no other reason for this than because it makes them more money.

The trouble is to limit and enforce that suppliers do automatically change you to the best tariff is to stifle competition, as then there really only would be one tariff per supplier that changes constantly.

That said Click 6 is still the cheapest tariff on the market and if that matters to you then its good.

Isn't this what matters? All I see on here is lots of anti-BG rants, fine but if they're cheapest I know who gets my money!

The point I was trying to make was they may be cheaper for new customers signing up for Click 6 through the switching sites but the fact remains they won't eb cheaper for existing Click 5 customers who don't know/won't be told about Click 6. It's a morally 'dodgy' way of doing business IMO (and I'm not suggesting Bg are the only company doing this, btw)...
