    Hi jasmine,

I haven't tried it with soup but I know other Old Stylers have with great success. There's an earlier thread with lots of tips on making chicken pie so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

Avoid anything with hydrogenated vegetable oil in it as that really is bad for you. Btw, Bisto gravy granules have HVO in them.

Is this still the case Thriftlady? I have just checked the Chicken tub in my cupboard (strictly for emergencies of course ;)) and it just says vegetable oils. Do HVO have to be specifically declared on the label?

have a look at the 'plate pies' thread on this forum hun, there's some cracking ideas on there, for a quick and easy chicken and mushroom filling, use left over chicken and a tin of batchelors condensed chicken and mushroom soup

buy some puff pastry, frozen blocks are handy. Defrost and roll out to the size of casserole dish.

cut mushrooms and simmer in water until ready. Drain excess liquid and discard liquid as this can be quite mouldy in flavour, if mushrooms are not 100% fresh.

cut chicken and simmer in water until ready, drain and use the stock to add to your white sauce.

Make a white sauce using butter, flour, milk, chicken stock, 1 bay leaf, salt and pepper. make sure sauce ends up quite thick, you can add some diluted cornflour to thicken.

add sauce, mushrooms and chicken to casserole dish and place puff pastry on top, brush with egg and bake for 30mins in oven at 200c or until pastry is ready.

Aldi do a frozen block of puff pastry for 45p we cut it in half when we buy it

or make own pastry half fat to flour so 8oz flour, 2oz lard, 2oz butter, water to bind, pinch salt

rub fat into flour and then use water to bind and then roll as thick as wanted

we use left over chicken from a roast, then fry chopped bacon and mushrooms add the chicken and a white sauce then pour into ovenproof dish cover with pastry and bake in oven for 45mins. (can be made day before then cooked next day or made and frozen, sometimes I make 2 and freeze one)
