To the taste or to one's waist?
Pastry whether bought or homemade has the same amount of fat in it -it won't work otherwise.

Butter, marge, lard, dripping, oil all have roughly the same amount of calories.

My preference is for homemade shortcrust made with half butter and half lard, or homemade quick flaky pastry made with butter (actually this has more fat in than other pastries -but it's fab), or bought all-butter puff pastry.

Avoid anything with hydrogenated vegetable oil in it as that really is bad for you. Btw, Bisto gravy granules have HVO in them.

Definitely agree with you regarding hydrogenated fats (evil they are!). For some reason ready-made pastry is one of the things that you often find them in, so it is always worth checking the label.

Yesterday, I caught the last part of come dine with me and the winning meal was a chicken and shallot pie where he cooked the pie top separately. It looked lovely and so was disappointed when I went to the web site to find due to copyright the recipe couldn't be posted. Did anyone see the programme and perhaps know which cookbook the recipe came from/ does anyone have a similar recipe? Many many thanks and Merry Christmas!!!

i saw the programme but wasnt concentrating on the recipe. I know that he got some ready made puff pastry and cut the pie lids out from the sheet and cooked these seperately on a baking sheet. Remember him frying off some chicken and shallots but cant remember what sauce it was he made...sorry hopefully someone will know the proper recipe as i have to say the chicken pie looked delish

  • Have you got On Demand telly? If so you can choose to watch it again. It was Channel 4, wasn't it? I'll have a look (when I can get a look-in on the telly).

I have some cooked chicken, puff pastry and a tin of Campbell's condensed Cream of Mushroom soup. Will the soup be ok used in the pie as a gravy or what are the alternatives?

    Thanks

Yes, it will be fine. I've done this myself! Maybe chop some mushrooms up to go with the chicken?
