Hmmmm - I wonder if I should buy this? I'm in the process of having the attic skimmed. Done a couple of walls. I'm just at a bit of a stand still as the sparky wanted to come back and spend a day sorting all the back boxes out in the studs - I could do this, but he needs to check the correct cables are in the correct places.

I'm gonna be skimming every room in the house, so I think it would be worthwhile buying a few tubs for when I get to that stage?

I would. Paint costs soon add up so it's always worthwhile to take advantage of cheaper prices wherever you can imo.

Thanks for paint info aliasojo. Might go for it, but better speak to the painter first I guess.

LC, so sorry to hear about your MIL, hope she's feeling better and healing up fast.

Andy, sorry to hear about the gestational diabetes. What a business - it's bad enough being pregnant and getting bigger and huger by the day, but to have to faff around with diet as well must be horrible. Plus I seem to recall (after all it's over 30 years ago now! ) that I got horribly fussy over food too, had to stop eating stuff that I'd always loved before. So to have to follow calorie controlled diet plus glucose testing etc must be really horrid. My sympathy to Mrs Andy. :)

Off to the house in a bit I hope (OH just popped out to get some bits of shopping) to take photos, and top up the bird food of course! Boiler should be in place, not sure what else will have changed.

If we can find the shears (Ah, I see them sitting at the top of the stairs - must have been part of the Christmas "tidy up") might do a bit of hedge trimming. I'm already sick of the hedge - it's a real fast grower, I think we trimmed it 3 times last year, and could have done with cutting it more really. Am tempted to absolutely scalp the b****r this time, will see how much energy I have.

Ooooh Andy, how great to be able to look at all your house pics on the TV. Might have to give that a try when we finally move in... Can hide the cable in the Thermaskirt! :j

Better get dressed to be ready for house visit! :o

I thought babies had to be six months old before could have flu jab (at least that's what i read yesterday as was looking into it as OH and I haven't had a flu vaccine...though i think we've both had flu already as we're both pretty knackered still) so sounds like they've changed it?

Sorry I meant that I was getting the flu jab - to prevent me catching it and passing it on to LLC. Managed to get it despite sleeping in until 35 mins before appointment, having a shower, clearing 3-4 inches of snow off the car and driving to the appointment.

sorry to hear about the diabetes, hopefully other wont cause the baby any issues.

@typeractive - I'd buy it now provided you've got room to store it. I tended to pick up 10L tubs of Crown white emulsion each time I was in B&Q as we always used them. that said, hopefully on the last tub now :D

as for progress, yesterday I took the multipoint locking mechanism out of the folding doors and made sure the new one worked before putting it in. In doing so I found out why the lock was stiff - wood of the frame was fouling it as it went in so it was at a slight angle - so that sorted that problem. So got it all in and working and ten took the old one apart with the FIL and within about 5 seconds of opening it up it was obvious what the problem was - a small peg which linked the handle to the multipoint mechanism had come out.

So it just proves that the 2 sets of idiots who we employed were either complete half-wits or liars (or both). took about 5 minutes to figure out the operation and about another 5 to figure out how to put the bits which had come out when I took the lid off back in place and then 5 mins in the garage to knock the pin back into place and we've now got a fully working spare.

Well I was in B&Q yesterday. I looked, but couldn't find the exact same paint as advertised. There was other Dulux matte paints but they didn't say trade, so I didn't really look into it. I was with my plasterer and he pointed out the crown paint which was half the price(ish) if I remember? No doubt you're correct anyway, it's worth me buying the paint and I can store it at the house, though the more stuff I buy the more I'm beginning to worry for it's safety in an unoccupied house. Having said that it's a very busy street so breaking in from thefront would be silly - right near the police station. And the back of the house looks out onto another street adjacent, which I have a right nosey neighbour. Plus my next door neighbour is a good guy and keeps me right - so hopefully touch wood!!!!

On the subject of home stuff - when I was in B&Q I had to buy a new extension cable as the one I have been using melted! Whoops!!! I found a pretty good offer for a 12m extension with 4 sockets and thermal trip switch, PLUS another 4m extension cable - a baby sized one. These were initially around £17 IIRC, but down to £12.98.

Just had a look on the site for you all, but couldn't see it - so might not be in every store?

evening everyone, well start of the new year and started the new year with gutso... well kind of, got some prices for back doors and french doors in the old kitchen that will be a dinning room. Missus had a plumber round because i need to move the stop !!!! from the kitchen to the utility room so we have had doors where the stop !!!! is. Only problem is that the plumber will need connect up new pipes but he wants a 1foot hole dug in a concrete floor so he can put the new stopcock in!!!! hmm heavy tools again, cant see me doing that with a bolster chisel and hammer!! anyone moved a stopcock?

a picture of what we have, this is the stopcock that comes into the house, wish it was coming up in the utility room but there you go...

  • Hey Stolt!! :)

What a !!!!!! to hear that!! Not fully sure what to suggest. would it be possible to tap into the pipe in the utility room? I.e. does it pass through the room you want it to be in? if so then you could stop the water on the mains, then 'only' have to dig down one hole and tap into it?

Maybe I'm way off target and that's not possible?

Diggin and hard work is not what you wanna hear at this stage I'm sure!

Don't think this will be of any help, though there's a few pics of when I replaced my lead pipe for the alkathene - which I see you already have. :)

Basically my supply came into the kitchen, and I wanted it to be in the garage where I will install my boiler - seems appropriate to keep the services together. So I dug up the yard and installed the connection into the garage. Then just left the remnainder of the old lead pipe under ground. It was a fun filled weekend of digging and installing.

if only it did, it would make it so much easier for me!!! i think it passes under the floor of the utility room but comes up in the kitchen floor then goes up the wall into the bathroom/loft then down the walls for the sink in the utility room and downstairs loo in the room that backs onto utility room. plumbers suggestion was to dig down to that pipe under the floor in the utility room and he can branch off that. trouble is i think he thinks that (keep up here :)) utility room is fed from that mains pipe but its not it comes up in the kitchen and then up the house wall then down (surprised he made that mistake to be honest) so i think he was thinking stopcock on that main there (clear out the pipes in the old kitchen) and take the mains up the wall in the utility to feed the rest of the house!!!
