OH is trying to work out how much paint we'll need to paint the walls. Any recommendations of manufacturer? I'm after a matt finish, it's too soon to do egg shell or anything like that anyway I think. Not keen on silk finish and stuff like that. This is just to get the house habitable for starters - we'll live with it for a while before deciding if we want any wall paper etc.

Builder reckons we could begin painting next week or the one after. He's going to get in touch with the chap who painted the render for us.

You'll need a mist coat of watered down matt emulsion before you paint anything and then take it from there with your preferred finish (not vinyl emulsion though)

We've generally stuck with Dulux matt finish and been happy with finish but any non cheapy paint should be fine to get a good coverage

If someone is doing it for you ask them for advice as they will know what they like working with and may prefere a trade paint which has different consistency

PS interesting to see the thermaskirt thanks - look forward to hearing how you get on with it

As above - watered down "mist" coat of white emulsion (or two :) ) and then onto painting for real. Great thing about using white for the mist coat is that it will show up any minor imperfections that you might want to fill before painting.

Reminds me I need to do some of teh same, after sanding of course :)

    And its usually cheaper! :money:

Thanks sunshinetours and LC, I think OH will get in touch with painter and ask if he has any preferences.

I should point out that the finished stuff will be a lot better than that first photo. Builder had just done a bit of a mock-up in one corner so we could see how the bottom and top bits work. (the top one slots on once decorating done, the bottom one has space to run cables in eg hi-fi cabling, computer stuff) behind.

Only problem they've had so far is the top stuff which is quite soft and bendy arrived in rolls, and with the cold they've "set", so electric convector heater is now running in the room where the thermaskirt is stored to soften it up again. I think it's gradually straightening out now, OH may call in on his way back from brief visit to DD2 and the Twins to [STRIKE]have a nosey[/STRIKE] inspect the ongoing central heating work.

Heard back from Kitchen Man, he's going to go to the house on Monday and do a final measure up now the plastering etc is done. Then we'll meet with him later in the week so we can double check everything before he orders the kitchen. We've already got the induction hob, and ordered the cooker hood (Elica Platinum), I think some of the rest Kitchen Man will supply (he can get a good price on some stuff)...

Or we could go to local suppliers and have a look at what's available there if I can raise the energy to get out of the house tomorrow. I am absolutely exhausted today from visiting the house yesterday, I stood too long at the back windows watching the birds - it's always the standing that really does me in.

So I better get me act together and start looking at sinks for utility. Was going to have double stainless steel sink, but now I'm wondering about getting at least one of those strange big and shallow sinks (if you know what I mean). Utility sinks will be for washing clothes but also hopefully dyeing and felting, so big and shallow might be better for such as felting. In one way it's silly to do this, when have I done any crafting recently? But I love fabric crafts, and I hope when the build and then declutter and move are over (and there'll be the gardening too!) maybe I'll have a little more time to indulge in my textile passions! ;)

Maggie, get some big trade tubs of Gliddens Contract Matt or Dulux Trade Supermatt (former i think is cheaper as you can buy in larger bulk) ..either are suitable for new plaster (straight on ...definitely no PVA)...your spoilt for choice in colour with white or magnolia. The plaster will continue to dry out through it. 2 coats watered-down as per instructions on side of the tub. Must be matt with no vinyl content - Dulux Rich Matt for example has vinyl content.

my plans for some DIY over the weekend went out the window when MIL tripped and fell down our front steps. head injury, 999, ambulance, big panic etc - lots of xrays and check up before being released. OH not happy today so phoned hospital and they agreed on scans. thankfully looks like nothing worse than mild concussion and generally badly bruised, battered and very shaken.

and to top it off we.ve had more snow tonight - not a huge amount but could do without.

meant to be getting flu jab tomorrow to protect LLC and picking up new tumble dryer as old one just keeps electrics.

then I might get some sanding done....... but probably not :D

Ouch ..that's gotta hurt...i had concussion after being knocked out of a sailing boat by the boom once (forgot to duck and it was a very windy day in the middle of Loch Tay!) ..the worst headache ever...as well as a neat scar as a permanent reminder! Suppose should be thankful she wasn't hanging onto LLC at the time.

I thought babies had to be six months old before could have flu jab (at least that's what i read yesterday as was looking into it as OH and I haven't had a flu vaccine...though i think we've both had flu already as we're both pretty knackered still) so sounds like they've changed it?

Wife spent most of wednesday in maternity and is confirmed as having gestational diabetes. She had appointments with diabetic dietrician, diabetic obstetrician, diabetic nurse to show how to monitor her glucose, scan, blood tests, urine test , blood pressure..so the full works..really can't complain about the service NHS giving her. Baby ok but OH's blood pressure at start of the day was heading off the scale (170/90 i think) to the point they told her they would check it again before she went home and would admit her for 24hours if it didn't come down. Fortunately it was just marginally below what they deemed acceptable to go home by end of day. We were there again this morning for an hour or so for further BP monitoring which has gone down a fair bit..i think the high BP was simply "white coat syndrome" from the stress of the situation/location. Anyway upshot is she has two weeks to see if change of diet controls it...early indications are it probably will as her glucose levels are falling already. I think she has about 3 appointments next week alone so parking is getting expensive at £1 per hour..don't suppose they do season tickets!

On a positive note the boiler has been serviced, was spot on with the flue gas emissions and passed with flying colours. So that's over 4 year of no issues..so glad we went with the vaillant boiler.

New TV arrived Tuesday morning so i spent most of the day swapping furniture from lounge to spare room . The old tv cabinet we've got is marginally too big but it seemed like a lot of hassle to cut it down so it's wedged quite tightly diagonally across a corner in the recess to side of fireplace. Planning at some point in the future to build a custom made cupboard for it. Also networked it up (via network cable) so i can share the mp3s/photos wirelessly on the laptop through the TV and route the sound through the hifi. So now i can browse all our house pics on the telly! Nothing like a new toy to play havoc with any DIY plans!

That's a good price..i think i paid something like £30 for 5litres of supermatt when was doing the bathroom plaster with it. 5 litres was just enough for 2 watered down coats of our bathroom walls and ceilings (minus shower enclosure area). Check in Brewers for prices on gliddens..i was put off it by 10litres being the smallest size.

If your putting a colour on later apparently it's better to paint with magnolia rather than white first...if i'd been doing a large area i would have got white for ceiling and magnolia for walls instead i just used white throughout.
