If I make small pics on here for you to make large if you wish, does anyone mind me sticking up on this thread? Should show you what's possible even with a bit of a small garden and we are quite proud :)

Ooooh yes please as long as you're in them somewhere. Pawpurrs, AJ and I would be very grateful! :D

Oh dear :o, must be my age :rotfl: .

    Garden's looking lovely Sam.

Latecomer - so sorry to hear you're having more trouble. I hope you can nip this in the bud and there's no repeat of the previous fiasco.

AJ - glad things worked out OK with the insurance.

  • Hi guys

Posted this query in the main DIY board but wondered if any of you could help here?

we've cut into out chimney breast in the kitchen to house our oven and hob. About to commence tiling the splashback.. all around will be worktop to wall unit height, except when it comes round to the inset chimney area, we would like to tile all inside.

My question is in regards to tile trim.. how will the exterior corners work to place tile trim in this way?
  • Ok here's a pic...

    SDC14424.JPG

As you can see, the silver trim shown will need to continue up as the whole of this wall inside the alcove will be tiled.

On the other wall, the trim will lay horizontally and will be at the height of the tiles to match the rest of the splashback.

My problem is, how should the long piece of trim meet the horizontal piece?

Littlerose, if i'm understanding you right in that you mean you want a vertical and horizontal trim to join then you cut 45 degree mitres.

Here i've been busy the last couple of days with a little woodworking project. Rather than keeping all the garden tools in the shed as well as DIY stuff i came up with an idea of building a new small shed out of the old toolstore. The old toolstore was a 2-door 6'x3' shed so i've made it into a 3'x3' single door potting shed.

Reused the side panels from the original toolstore and one of the rear panels - everything else needed modification or rebuilding in some way. Cut the floor in half (the other half was rotting) and replaced ends of rotting floor joists, cut the roof in half and then cut one of the front 8" wide side panels in half to form 2 new front side panels either side of single door. Also cut the front top panel in half. The front side panels were about the most difficult part as some of the shiplap cladding was rotten so needed replacing with good timber rescued from the spare rear panel plus needed timber framing extracted from the left over pieces.

I've put it right next to the house. I suspect i'm going to get comments from the neighbour again but it gives us a bit more privacy as runs the length of the wall that's a few inches shorter than the rest of the fence. There's still a bit of wall visible but i'm going to train the jasmine nearby along the fence or might use some willow/bamboo screening too.

Anyway this little project is totally MSE as it hasn't cost me a penny. No new timber at all ..all the new nails and screws were the excess left from the new big shed. Left the same roof felt on - though i suspect it's very near the end of it's life i think. Going to paint it green - the colour it already was - as previous owner left a tub of green fence paint so again no cost.

Evening everyone, can see i everyones been busy. Ive had three weeks off doing anything on the house as I chipped a vertbrae on my spine and the muscle ahd given away, bent over at 45degs for 2 weeks, ven the ostepath and all the cracking etc couldnt get me right.... you forget when your healthy how fragile everything is. Anyway been doing loads in the garden, finally managed to get the planters down the side of the garden and i put some lights in them, got to say it myself at night with the lights on the garden looks lovely. First time this evening the kids were playing in there playhouse i have a lay on the sun lounger and had a sleep for a hour.... missus came and woke me up.

Kids are desperate for a pet, i'd loe a dog but the missus is worred about the house and it being ruined, so i thought about a rabbit but i dont think it will get much company during the winter whn the girls wont want to go out in the garden. So i thought about a small aviary with zebra finches in it... but the missus put me off that aswell. Put a ebble pool in today, not finished it as i need some large boulders around it and maybe some aquatic plants as the trough as some troughs for palnts so it will soften it up. Would have loved a pond but again is a lot of work and i wont a low maintence garden so i wanted the noise of splashing water, and i got to say it works, sent me off to sleep this evening lol!!

thought id post some pics up of my progress. Will have to turn my attention to the extension in the next couple of weeks, electrician due monday to finish off the lights in there and the kitchen is being fitted early august....

Can see the flower beds are filling in nicely, think next year they will filled in completely.

posted a pic of a police helicopter hovering over my house, it was a decent height but i zomed right in and realised he had the door open and was looking down on me!!!

Stolt, now I see your gabions all round the garden they look fantastic! I don't think I got the full effect from your earlier photos as they were more close-ups.

How about a cat as a pet? They can be really friendly (or not, ;) as the case may be), and don't need walking like a dog. (though some cats can be trained to go for walks on a lead) Mind you, cats can also wreck furniture, especially those cute little kittens that your girls would love! ;)

Or a house rabbit? Rabbits can be trained to live in the house. To use a litter tray. (I've met a house rabbit in the past, but have no experience of them myself)

Sorry to hear of your back problems. Mucho sympathy! ;) I know how horrid it is, so enjoy your splashy fountain and the sleep it brings. When my back was bad about 10 years ago (to extent I was considering surgery) I went to a local chiropracter recommended by one of the kids' friends Dads. He helped a lot, but really should go back as having probs again.

Hope your back improves soon, do take care.

All the best from Liverpool, Maggie

Garden's looking good Stolt. Did the birds eat that strawberry? We've got a female blackbird that is devouring mine even though they're netted and right up by the house, little beggar has had more than me.

I was also going to suggest a cat, but maybe a rescue cat rather than a kitten. A kitten will run up your curtains, they've even been known to run up the wall. We had a rescue cat, 12 months old, and he was wonderful, past the naughty kitten stage and fully house trained and the charity had him checked at the vets and his injections all up to date before we had him. Also, the charity would know the personality of the cat and would choose the right family, i.e. wouldn't put a cat who may have issues with children from, say, problems in it's previous home, with a family where there's young children, etc.

Hope your back improves soon, both OH and I have been there so can sympathise.
