No news, except we've almost finished our utility room.. will update the blog once it's done!

Currently trying to pick a paint colour for our hall/stairs/landing... any thoughts from anyone on these Dulux colours?

    Timeless
    Natural Calico
    Natural Hessian
    Ivory

We're after a neutral / yellowy creamy type shade.. something warm but not too bright?

We have Timeless. All ceilings are done with it and the walls in the loft bedroom and the two other bedrooms. It certainly doesn't come under the yellowy/creamy part of the spectrum. It most definitely is an alternative to white but softer. This is the best I can do picture wise and realise that your monitor may show colours different from mine.

I think your best bet is to get tester pots, better to spend a little bit on those than waste ££s on enough to paint the whole room and then be disappointed (trust me - we did it in the loft :o, then repainted in Timeless).

Sounds like it's gogogogo! Nothing in S Wales however saw Brockways pics on BBC Wales last night with snow over the Brecons! Yours sounds like your making moves Maggie, lovely. Is there much work on the property to be done?

Yes, found the parquet floor underneath but looked like below so a pal and I spent 2 full days on the complete downstairs. Pine in reception rooms and oak in hallway! On our viewings of the house we did pull back some of the carpet to check out!

Sorry about the size of pics guys, won't enlarge from FlickR in future!

All nice neutral colours that we've either used or considered so have samples of on bits of lining paper!

We have Dulux Ivory in our spare room ..looks nice against pure brilliant white skirtings, coving, other woodwork (a picture in a dulux catalogue sold it to me!). The appearance seems to change from day to night - fresher yellower colour in the light and cosier browner colour as it darkens.

Natural Hessian we are having in our bathroom (tub was bought months ago but not used it yet!). Possibly too dark for a hall/landing though as it's much browner than the other colours. Once it on the walls i'll be in a better position to comment !

Timeless ..have a look at TomsMom's blog as she has it around their house. Looks good but it's nearer the white end of the colour scale and more of a subtle neutral colour.

Again i thought Natural Calico is nearer the white end of the colour chart and fairly subtle shade.

It's worth going to the dulux website and having a look as they have pictures of rooms done in all the major colours.

Out of the 4 i think i'd favour Ivory in the hall. The subtler shades of calico and timeless i think are more likely to highlight any scuffs/marks (hall/landing tends to get alot of traffic through) and Hessian a bit too dark where the room doesn't have a huge amount of light. On your criteria of neutral/yellowy i'd say Ivory ticks the boxes. Gets away from the renovation standard magnolia!

If your walls do tend to pick up a lot of scuffs i'd probably go for the tougher "endurance" finish (or whatever dulux call it these days).
  • Thanks for your replies Andrew & TomsMum! It's quite a narrow hallway so something to brighten it up would be good, without being too bright IYSWIM.

    Not the greatest of pictures:

I'm tempted with Ivory too.. tester pots are definitely the way to go as we learnt with the back bedroom! :)

Good morning: If you have a Dulux Decorator Center near you they can mix any Dulux shade for you using Glidden paint at a considerable savings....we had 'Timeless' matched and saved ££.

I second that! We've already had three walls in h/s/l repainted (half day's pay to decorator plus cost of another tin of paint) because they were very badly scuffed when the new bedroom furniture was taken upstairs. It was in boxes though which I think made the delivery men take less care than they would have otherwise, but the scuff marks were awful.

Also, it only needs a mucky kid (thinking of my grandchildren here :rotfl: ) to put their hand on the wall to balance themselves while putting their shoes back on (why can't they sit on the stairs like normal people?????, no outdoor shoes in the house here!) and you've got a mucky handprint which if you try to wipe it off you then leave a shiny mark on your lovely matt paint. And you'd be amazed how many times you actually rub up against the wall without realising! It's a no-win situation. Definitely go for the Endurance or equivalent, or don't get matt paint. I wish we knew then what we knew now  .

Oh yes, we did that. Not at a Dulux Decorator Centre though but at a local store which has a mixing machine. We chose from the Dulux colour card and our decorator had all the colours mixed up with Leyland Trade (his preferred brand).
  • It's a bit cold here today!!
