    I've remembered, it's hyperacusis.

I work in St Pauls. Walked in from there the first day it was open, got myself the wrong side of Bond Street because I went to Staples first, and was directed practically all the way down to the Bristol Evening Post roundabout!

Didn't go into any shops, but did ask one of the management if they intended to have this awful boom-de-boom-de-boom noise going on every day, and was assured it was just for the opening. I'm sure I'm not the only Grumpy Old Person who dislikes relentless muzak ...

Paparika might not mind so much if the light from the car park was directed into the car park, but it's like the Starship Enterprise at night! Very striking ...

Don't worry, nothing would induce me to pay £3 for 2 hours parking! :rotfl: Especially not when I know where to park for free and walk in. Just as long as they don't introduce some brainless residents parking scheme around work!

Now is that Radio Bristol? There is also a community station based in St Pauls which might be more sympathetic to your plight. Let me know if you need help tracking it down.

    with you!

Maybe t'internet comes in through a different set of wires / cable etc. But be grateful it does, whatever the explanation. You can email Environmental Health, can't you? cc your local councillors ...

I'd rather speak to environmental health, i tried booking a repair on the council's website once, still not heard a reply........

I prefer to speak to a human, but i hear what your saying, i'll ring em from work tomorrow
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Gosh....I'm feeling bad about planning to go there now. (The advertising has been immense but strangely shabby IMO). I've gone to some effort arranging to meet people who I know will spend too -vicarious shopping is better for the soul than real shopping I hope.
I've seen no advertising for it whatsoever. But I did see a quick slot on TV the other day when some reporter was there as evidence that the credit crunch wasn't stopping people spending if all the people in there right then were anything to go by.

Anyway, I have to be in the area on Monday, and I am being very brave and taking a train.... and I am thinking I might be able to find it and have a look around (as I'll have already paid for the train fare it seems a shame to waste it by simply coming back straight away).

I will admire the shiny things and hide from the people. I'll stick close to the edges and try not to use the moving stairs!

    :)

Best of luck with THAT plan! :rotfl:

You should be able to find it from the station (assuming it's Bristol Temple Meads) because it seems to be well signposted from t'other side (I haven't approached it from BTM yet).

Paparika, know what you mean about preferring to speak to someone, although I often start with email because I find that easier than phone. You know what you've said, and when you've said it, with an email. You just don't know if the other person heard you ...

The trouble is I'm going for a job interview. On a train. Now, I have a beach bag (not interview wear!) that I could take and shove my jeans/trainers in. But the beach bag is large and leopard print. So, do I take the bag/fill it with comfy clothes, feel very aware of it being inappropriate during the interview (shove it under a desk maybe) and change in some loos.... and enjoy the circus. Or do I remain in my uncomfortable work clothes, that will make me feel anxious and that I stand out ... I'll keep pulling at them etc. I do hate dressing up. I absolutely loathe it.

Actually, I need a Plan B. I have NO other bag at all. Oh dear.

Interviews should be in jeans so you can go for a wander about the area afterwards in comfort :)
  • You need a more sober bag, I reckon.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

I know this may not affect the way you FEEL, but I doubt your work clothes will stand out in Cabot Circus. After all, many people will nip out in their breaks.

And I would have a handbag as well as the leopard print, and ask the receptionist if the leopard print could be kept to one side during the interview.

If you have no handbag, you need a charity shop jaunt. Indeed, that may furnish you with a less remarkable bag, large enough for your jeans.

Or you aim to get to Cabot Circus in time to buy a splendid new bag before the interview, and change into your interview finery (carried until then in a carrier bag) in the toilets. (which are, BTW, quite OTT, although there seem to be plenty of them!)

Although personally I'd be heading into the older part of Broadmead where there is (used to be?) a market stall selling all manner of bags, and another dedicated bag shop which won't have 'designer' bags, but then won't have 'designer' prices either.

But that is really a dilemma for the Employment Board, we are rather Off Topic with it here.

To stop us wandering away from Paparika's problems with noise and light pollution, I've started a new thread on the delights of Cabot Circus here.

Paparika, did you get your phone line back OK?

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

    A bit of history...http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/7634938.stm

This is Cabot Circus, its on my doorstep :(

I look at my kitchen window and the spaceship "car park" is in my face.

My problem is sleep at night or lack of, since the car park was built the lights have been left on 24/7 light pollution being a big problem, but not as big as shining in my bedroom all night.

Have already spoken to the new owners who could only see the pound signs in front of their eyes.

But the new Cabot circus is so noisy, and at night when everyone leaves the lovely new restaurants and new cinema and trapes back to the car park that is noisy too.

I have started a diary of the night disruption, but the problem is, if the owners of the car park are not interested, and environmental health have been involved since it started to be built and allowed the builders to break all the rules of working out of the hours they promised they would stick to, what hope do i have of making my voice heard, i'm even part of the neighbourhood community, we have complained as a big voice, been on tv and the local newspaper, and we seem to be the ones that loose out and basically 'tough live with it' attiude... just look at what we have given you..

I'm tired, i have work to go and do, i want my sleep.. any advice

The Landlords are Land Securities and Hammerson. Google them to access websites. Both are listed companies on the FTSE, and are generally well regarded. Richard Akers runs the retail side at Land Securities. They will both claim to be socially responsible developers, so put that to the test. Ring the press officers, tell them you are going to the local press unless you have a meaningful response within 48 hours. Don't be put off if you feel you are imposing. They built a shopping centre opposite your house after all. I honestly think they would be concerned by the issues you raise and will react, if not act. Leaving the lights on all night hardly seems green, and again, if you look at the websites both will have green policies. Good luck.
