Well I go to butchers and farm shops and can say there really isn't that much difference.
I think you're more "anti Supermarket" rather than really being an expert on this. This is just classic herd mentality, everyone knows what the majority will say so the just say the same thing to feel comfortable.0 -
If you are unhappy about the quality of meat in the supermarkets (as I am) I think it is important we vote with our feet and go to the local butchers, whilst there are still some left, otherwise we will soon have no choice but to buy supermarket meat.0

I'm quite surprised at this and wonder where your butcher and farm shop is getting their meat from. Perhaps - like the supermarkets - they simply buy from a meat wholesaler?
My butcher sells his own meat, mostly - supplemented by some from the local market. He can tell me the breed of animal (makes a difference, with beef & pork, especially), where and how it was reared (I only buy free range or slow/traditionally reared meat), how old the animal was at slaughter and how long it's been hung (very important to me!!). I don't know any supermarket that can do this, but then I haven't bought meat in a supermarket for more than five years
I do look at the meat in a supermarket now and then, but it's all too red (especially the beef). And despite the fact that they call some of it "matured" it's not been dry-hung - that's why they have to put a sanitary towel in the bottom of the plastic carton, to mop up the blood. Dry-hung meat doesn't ooze blood like that.
Given the price of supermarket meat, it's horrendously expensive for what is really poor quality. And if it's cheap, it's cheap for a reason
Find a decent butcher or buy online, in bulk, for the freezer.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

I've only ever tried Well Hung Meat which is not cheap, but organic. To me it's worth the price for the quality & flavour.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0

I agree.
I live in Norfolk, plenty of farms and farmers markets etc here. A few times I've filled up my freezer from farm shops etc but to be honest, I find a lot of it worse quality than Tescos (and definitely no better).
I've brought Tescos cheapest chicken, I've brought expensive farm shop ones. No one in my household can taste any difference (hence I've gone back to the cheap option).
As for steak, a bit from Tesco's fresh meat counter or a bit of their pre packed rump tastes absolutely no different to that sold in farm shops (and due to their strict sell by dates, is often fresher)
As for the butchers that most towns seem to have, that sell you a tray of meat for £9.99 etc, that meat is crap compared to Tesco etc.Martin Lewis is always giving us advice on how to force companies to do things.
How about giving us advice on how to remove ourselves from any part of MoneySupermarket.com
I hereby withdraw any permission Martin might have implied he gave MoneySupermarket.com to use any of my data. Further more, I do not wish ANY data about me, or any of my posts etc to be held on any computer system held by MoneySupermarket.com or any business it has any commercial interests in.0 -

Yeah, it's psychological with most people. They almost "will" the meat to taste better because they've bought it from a Butchers/Farm shop rather than a Supermarket and end up believing it.
I'd love to carry out an experiment. I'd love to some how be able to swap the meat in a Butchers with Asda meat but not tell the customers. And then do the same with Asda, swap all the meat with the meat that originally came from the Butcher. I can guarentee the people would still say the meat from the Butcher was the best.
It's definitely a mind thing with some people. Some anti Supermarket thing in their heads that gets it all going. As I said if you did that experiment I bet the people here who swear by Butchers etc wouldn't notice the difference. It's like a placebo effect.sweetnskint wrote: »i really appreciate your replies.... thanks everyone!mi still say that most meat at supermarkets is totally disgusting-i suppose not everyone has such high standards....
It's almost like a bit of a Hyacinthe Bucket thing going on. I recon Sweetnskint would eat all of a completely disgusting piece of meat and convince themselves that it's suppose to taste that way and is in actual fact nice just because it's come from a Butchers. But similarly if had the best piece of meat from a Supermarket would convince themselves it's disgusting just because it came from a Supermarket.
If you really judged meat from it's quality you've notice you'll get good meat from a Supermarket and sometimes not so good, the same with Butchers and farm shops. If you think every bit of meat you had from a Butchers/Farm shop has always been wonderful and every bit of meat from a Supermarket rubbish it's simply because you want to believe that.0 -
If you want to taste some of the very best meat on the market today, take a look at the Donald Russell website, expensive but better quality I have never tasted!!!:cool:0
