The Magical Mystery Tour - SOA added 15th Oct

Hi

I am back, I am jobless. And not just yet ready to share the debt again with you.. I am very ashamed of the cc if I am honest.

I lost me job yesterday, but I am trying to start positive, I am posted out my cv for one job and emailed it out for another.

I am sat here while listing stuff on Amazon.

But I wanted somewhere I can come and keep myself positive and list all the little things I want to do and any achievements I manage.

Hopefully I will get a job soon and still have some of my redundancy money left. So here is hoping to a good job hunting mission!

Oh and to top it all I have a date tonight
Current debt - £16,300 :(
Debt at worst 17/03/2011 - £18,067.62:eek::eek:

Right just listed a load of stuff on Amazon, will be looking at £67.05p if it all sells which will help a little.

Well I figured not knowing where you were heading was a bit of a mystery tour!

  • HI,

I'm sorry to hear about your redundancy unfortunately I've been there and done that. I don't know what industry you work in but if it is anything like mine (IT) and you have to go through job agencies to help get you jobs then you need to apply for a lot more jobs a day. I'm sorry if this doesn't apply to you but here is my quick guide to getting a job.

Sign up to monster.com jobserve.com etc etc and get their daily emails for jobs relevant to your area. Then apply for every single job on there every day, even if it is the wrong area or the skills aren't 100% right, this is because just because that job isn't possibly the right one your providing your cv to a recruitment agency who will then add it to their database, they will then search their database the next time a job comes in and your cv will be ready and waiting for them to call first before it even gets on to the websites.

Also apply for things where you can do 60-80 % of the skills listed - this applies more in IT than if you're a doctor I don't think just knowing 60% of the body would work ;) - but job descriptions are often wish lists and no candidate often has everything so just be honest that you can do what you can do, you can learn the rest with their help, but it might be you know the vital bit then are desperate for and they already have people who know the bits you don't anyway and will teach you the rest as your bit is the most vital.

There are websites that give you help to present your cv in the best light, unless your redundancy includes a paid review service I wouldn't advise paying to get a cv make over but get friends / family and possibly colleagues you trust to review it for you for silly mistakes and also to make sure you're not forgetting to include big chucks of your job that you just do and yet someone might be looking for on a cv. Remember CV's are quite personal everyone has different ways some say 2-3 pages (which is what i'd do to be honest) some say put education first etc, but even if you have a degree if you graduated 10 years ago and your experience is more relevant you need to think that a busy short staffed manager might be looking at 10 cv's so if you can get the most relevant stuff on the first page of your cv for the jobs you're applying for if they make it to page 2 then you can back it up with qualifications etc. I'm sure people will come and contradict this but to be honest that helps prove what I'm saying that everyone reads cv's differently so don't get disheartened if agencies or friends keep telling you to re-do it. If it means you get a job at the end of the day it will work out in the end.

Sorry if this is a bit vague and I'm sure you're going to be fine, I'm sorry if this isn't relevant to your situation but good luck and I hope you're succesful soon.

    Thanks

I basically work in Admin. I was working in Property for a big Logistics company.

I have an english degree, so I am qualified to do loads, but actually trained to do nothing!

At the moment, I am aiming to apply for anything. I've going to drop in an see and old school friend on monday and see if her supermarket need anyone!

There will be access to a paid review service type thing, but I need to get into see an employment solicitor first which my former company will be paying for (I have this in writing). I want to ask them a few questions anyway as there was no notice period, I found on on Friday and was asked to leave straight away and I didn't think they could do that.

  • Hi Lucy

Really sorry to hear that they have treated you so badly, the rules around redundancy depend on numbers of people at risk size length of service etc but if you want advice contact ACAS they deal with industrial disputes of all shapes and sizes and can offer advice on redundancy situations.

I was one of 20 in head office and I've been there about 3 1/2 yrs. I figured if they are going to pay £250 for me to see an employment solicitor then I can ask them.

But I will kepe you all posted
