is it not a bit pointless doing this challenge if it's not stopping me from spending money, only shifting WHEN I spend it?
I know what you mean, I did wonder the same. Although I've found that since it makes me plan ahead for my spend days, I'm therefore planning what I'm buying and how much it costs, so even on my spend days I spend much less than I would've before, and the days where I don't spend anything at all are obviously a bonus!
I think if you're just re-arranging when you're spending, but still being really frivolous on those days, then it probably is a bit pointless. I'm finding it totally addictive though, and if it's possible I'd maybe even go as far as to say I'm enjoying the challenge! :P
I've been keeping a money diary as well, so that's really helping to make me think twice about anything I spend - and I'm hoping I'll be able to look back through it at the end of the month and cut out even more of my spending!
Like most of the others, I don't count spending on essentials as a spend day either - something like petrol I would've included in my budget (although since I'm a jammy sod, I have a fuel card for work and don't have to pay for my petrol), so I really only count days when I'm spending my "disposable" income.
Anyway - good luck with it - I hope you find it as helpful as I have so far once you get into it!

I agree with crap_with_money that it teaches you to plan ahead which means you spend less.
There's a direct correlation between how many times we go to the supermarket and how much we spend most months.
Just being mindful of what you're doing rather than mindless is enough to start getting things under control. It makes you think and cuts down on impulse spending.
I also think it teaches discipline and motivates you to try to manage with what you've got rather than go and buy something.
For us it reduces waste and is good for my creativity because if my supplies are down to little more than a few random veg some breadmaking flour, some cheese and a pint of milk then perhaps I should go shopping?
OR, as happened last week I can send the fam off to school and work with veg soup, bread and cheese thus using up the stuff that might go to waste and saving money on shopping in the process.
Sometimes it's a bit artificial when I put stuff off 'til tomorrow to preserve my NSD and sometimes miracles happen and son or hubby comes home with supplies!
I think it helps us, anyway.
