Porridge For Breakfast - Flling or Not?

I love porridge but never add anything other than pinch of salt to it (Scottish mother...) and can't stand it with fruit or anything else in it, however I find that it doesn't always fill me up until lunchtime - I tend to get hungry at about 11 ish and by lunchtime I am ravenous. I have switched to having 1 poached whole egg and 1 poached egg white on a slice of toast and that fills me up until lunchtime no bother. My cholesterol is regularly checked and last time was 4.2. I still have porridge from time to time though, and I have also recently started having Oatibix minis with hot milk - my goodness they REALLY fill you up - I had a big bowl the other day and didn't want anything to eat until 3pm and even then I wasn't starving! They aren't the nicest things in the world though....Jane

Don't eat sausage or burgers or anything like either.
Tonight we had chicken and rice, I ate a small amount.
Oh doh! Just realised, my hypothyroid. One of the symptoms I think is raised cholesterol, could that be it, even though I use Thyroxin?

I have had my thyroid removed and am also on Thyroxine, for life!
Ever since, I have had high cholesterol and had to take statins. I stopped them about 8 months ago as I was having side effects and just have a blood test for cholesterol and thyroid levels about twice a year now.
My last cholesterol level was 6.3. I am sure I read that oats porridge was supposed to help to lower cholesterol levels, so I eat quite a lot of it made quite thick.
It seems to keep me quite full until lunch time.Felines are my favourite

Hello, never posted here before but I had to share my porridge recipe!
It really does fill me up till lunch time, and it does me for 2 breakfasts:
Swiss Bircher
90 g porridge oats
113g low fat natural yogurt
113 ml) skimmed milk
1 banana
1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped
Blueberries/strawberries/any other fruit you like
Mix the oats, yogurt and milk in a large bowl. Mash the banana, slice the strawberries or crush the blueberries slightly with a fork. Mix everything together, cover and leave in the fridge overnight
Can't take credit myself, it's a recipe from here http://oldchem.piczo.com/?g=45961429&cr=4 but is really really tasty. And yes, before you ask, you eat it cold0 -
Hello peeps :hello:
It’s been mentioned on here several times about having porridge for breakfast, so, for the last 4 weeks I’ve changed from cornflakes to porridge everyday for breakfast, thing is, I don’t find it filling as I’m usually hungry again mid morning, is there some kind of trick to it?
*I’m sure Pinky will be along shortly to slap my legs; I have a feeling I’ve posted this in the wrong section again* :rotfl: :rotfl:
I find porridge sooooooo filling, i get hungry mid-morning if I have normal cereal.
I use the Sainsburys own brand WITH added bran (its in a bag rather than a box) I don't know if the bran makes it more filling (but its good to eat extra bran anyway).
I also make it with skimmed milk only & no water.0 -
I make my own porridge mix up and keep it in the fridge, it has oats, milk powder, raisons, ground linseed (AKA flaxseed), wheatgerm, and a little tiny bit of brown sugar. I add some water and microwave for 2 mins, almost instant porridge and it REALLY REALLY CHEAP lol :T
Got sick of paying through the roof for instant porridge full of sugar and rubbish when I can make my own healthier version for heaps less."Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!!"Nov NSD: ?/30 Nov Make 10 Day ?/300Get Rid Of Debt: ?/2000 !! :mad:0 -
Perhaps Porridge is not filling enough as not balanced.
I tend to have whatever is on offer Bran Flakes / Museli / Shredded Wheat etc, seems to be more filling.
I weigh 60g for each breakfast.

I have either porridge or muesli for breakfast and I have to make myself eat more porridge than I think in order to feel satisfied all morning. I am not always in the mood to eat that much. Hm muesli is more satisfying and esp if soaked the night before. If people want some more sweetness then just add some dessicated coconut to the dry mix
I also make granola, which I store in a lock n lock box. It keeps for quite a while and makes a guilt-free pud with yoghurt and berries
I am not so fussy on making toasted cereals though, because of the released acrylamide when toasting or baking carbohydrates0 -

not for me I hate the stuff
does it work out cheaper then the supermarket's own brand?
