I'm a dopey at this time of night going to have to get some sleep

Me too ,hun. Gotta pick up a stupid parcel from the stupid delivery office soon. Night night.

I'd still get on2 docs for a lowering cholesterol thing, even if it is a condition you are having treatment so it should still be monitored. Don't be fobbed off if you can be 4rsed but if you can't, do it next week. :) but do it, hun. You're insistence may provoke them into giving you more info at the least. REMEMBER it is the squeaky wheel that's gets oiled :)

  • I loooooveee porridge, I have it with half water and half home made soya milk and then add a handful of sultanas to it.

I then have a banana mid morning though but TBH I don't regard that as a problem, I have fairly volatile blood sugar levels and I'm much better if I don't let them "dip" so I try to eat every three hours or so, I don't think it's good for anyone to go hours and hours without food. Eating isn't bad, especially in the first half of the day.

I agree with the earlier posts about avoiding what in our house is generically known as "crud", we make our own bread and cakes and we very rarely eat processed food, OH's asthma is better for it and we both feel better.

You may find that a homemade muesli fills you up more.

I make a muesli out of the following and it lasts for a couple of weeks!

    1 x 100g packet sunflower seeds (22p at Tesco)
    1 x 100g packet pumpkin seeds (48p at Tesco)
1 handful chopped hazelnuts (Aldi do big bags for around 50p which will last for 4 muesli batches)
1 handful golden linseeds (£1.27 for a 300g at Asda which will last approx 8 muesli batches)
1/2 kg oats (58p for 1kg, Tesco Value Oats)

I put all the above in a large roasting tin and pop under the grill. As soon as the top looks golden I give it a mix round and back under the grill. When the whole lot is toasted golden brown I leave it to cool completely then put in large tupperwares.

To this base, when I have breakfast I'll add some fresh fruit - whatever's cheap (or free if foraging). At this time of year it's blackberries!

I can guarantee the muesli will keep you full and it's packed with healthy oils from the seeds.

I found that apart from porridge I am almost always hungry mid morning when I eat breakfast.

If I don't I can normally last until about lunch time.

My porridge was uncooked with just a small amount of milk and glass of fruit juice.

I might have to start having that again. But I really can't face breakfast at 8am.

  • I find porridge filling but then I usually have a large bowl (after all it's cheap and it's good for you) :D and I often add fresh fruit (grated apple, toasted hazelnuts and cinnamon is nice) or dried fruit (dates, apple, etc) - if you add fruit then you don't usually need sugar.

I find that if I only have porridge (the traditional way, with a bit of sugar or honey on top) I get the sugar-drop shakes by mid morning.

It was explained to me that if you feel like I do you need to eat some protein and fat with your carb, so I add a couple of tablespoonfuls of toasted chopped nuts, pumpkin, sunflower and hemp seeds. Also make it with more milk than water (I use soya milk) for extra protein. Even better, have it savoury, with a pinch of salt instead of sugar or honey (avoids the hypoglycemic drop!).

In chinese medicine I suffer from "damp" in my abdominal area (don't ask!) so I was recommended to "feed my fire" with warming food, especially first thing in the morning and in colder climates (like the UK for me - as an Italian).

  • i've been eating ready brek and it keeps me full for a few hours, some days i use s/s milk and sometimes water. lately ive been mixing water and milk. the milk helps make it smoother, and also makes it slightly more filling. instead of the 30g serving on the box, i usually have 40 or 50g of ready brek and increase the water/milk amount proportionately. then microwave about 1-1.5 mins.. dont like it too hot.

i wonder if anyone can suggest adding anything to the porridge to make it a bit more appealing? golden syrup? fruit? i really dont like nuts or things that are in muesli, raisins etc.. too rough for me!

Finely chopped dried apricots or prunes, they get a lot softer if you soak them in water or milk the night before and then add them to the porridge.

Also cooked apples (apple sauce). You can chop nuts and seeds so finely that they might be more appealing. Also toasting them makes them taste nicer.

it fills me up sooooooo much, my alternative is blueberry wheats (like shredded wheat but with blueberrys in them).
