saving loose change (merged)

Just to say I have bank accounts with SMile + Co Op, so I can pay in at the post office. 2 separate post offices have told me I can't pay cash in, but then realise that actually I can
) Also, the main post office in town gave me LOADS of cash bags, no probs, which I could take away to fill up.... so if the banks are being funny, you could try your P.O.
I've been tempted to try those machines at the supemarket but they take a % of the money so I've been good so far and not succumbed!0 -
I use the Post Office too when I change mine up
I have an Alliance and Leicester account which I can access through the P/O and often end up just paying it in to that to top up the family allowance. They always give me loads of bags too for the next batch

Hi wigglebeena,
There's a long thread on the Anything Else Moneysaving board that should help:
saving loose change
I've moved your thread over to that board so that it can be merged with the other one.

...it was the sound of my OH putting his loose change into the empty coffee/change jar, completely of his own accord.

I just bought a tin that you put money into, and the only way to get the money out is to use a tin opener.
Anyone else think that this is a good idea for saving up some money? For a person like me who regularly goes into the savings jar (for some milk or bread etc) I think its a brilliant idea.
My aim is to try to get £500 in there before the end of july so that I can pay a big chunk of my over draft off, and it will be money that I wont miss!- Total Debt :£190,000 - Mortgage
- Owed: £9000 Virgin Atlantic American Express
- Owed: £9000 Tesco Clubcard Mastercard
- Owed: £5500 Barclaycard Platinum
- Owed: £1800 - Car Payments
- Debt Free Date : May 2050

My view is to do whatever works for you.
I wouldn't do that myself as it would have entailed paying my hard-earned money on something which would have to be discarded once access to any savings were gained.
Also I would rather put the money in a savings account (even one with a low rate of interest because that is better than earning nothing in a tin). If you are going to save £500 by the end of July that's more than £3 a day on average, so worth going to the building society once a week to pay it in.
And the tin could be stolen - or are you keeping it under your mattress?
Or it might be just too tempting to open before your target date.0
