I'm dumbfounded. :) Ignored my post, in this case #136, for the umpteenth time, doesn't bother to thank me and then thanks you as if you posted the link. :rotfl:

Actually the OP is far too annoying for me to continue helping them.

Note that I did not write that the lack of RAM was the reason for the problem of 'freezing'. I wrote that is was the likely reason.
Because if the problem was too many programs loading at Start Up, fitting more RAM would take care of this.

If this were not the case, we could investigate issues with XP SP3 or malware.

Agreed, the OP does not actually read the advice given and thinks that we are psychic regarding the actual current state of the machine!

Donnie - sorry, but I have thanked you a number of times before, including one of your very recent posts. Do you need thanking for every single post? If so, sorry - I didn't realise this was the etiquette!

I also have not responded to that post yet because you suggested measures for which I need to be at my home PC. As I have mentioned a number of times before, I am only at the PC in question in the evenings, so all I could say right now is that I will download the program this evening. There doesn't seem much point in saying that, does there?

If I did not read the advice given, I would hardly be here now asking questions, eight pages on.

Is that your best effort? Are you really trying or are you just really trying our patience?

Hint - see the length of the last HJT log that you posted.

No, it's nothing to do with the thanking... it's to do with my telling you how to find out what RAM is installed on your system, only for you to ask how to find out which type of RAM you might need. :)

It gives the impression, not for the first time, that you appear to ignore some posts.

Anyway, you will note there are various tabs when you open CPU-Z. Click on the one labelled SPD or wait for it.......Memory for the information that you need.

    Hi Suiko,

Sorry I've been gone so long - been catching up at work after my holiday! :D

Not had time to read all this thoroughly yet, but a few points:

    1) 256 RAM is definitely not much to be playing with, though it should run XP just about. If you can afford an upgrade, it would be a very good thing to do to improve performance. It's also very easy to do! Never used CPU-Z myself, but I suggest you run it and post the results so we can work out what kind of RAM you would need to buy.

    2) The programs we suggested you download to clean your machine but should not affect your startup speed unless you have them set to 'run on startup'. Which they shouldn't do by default, if my memory serves, but ah well - things happen!

    3) Can you post a 'full' HJT log? I haven't got fluent in reading them yet, but I know they should be much longer than the latest one you posted - did you have a copy and paste error?

    4) Spybot S&D has an 'active' component called 'TeaTimer' which can be set to run all the time to help protect you better. I'd check to see if this is turned on, and if so, turn it OFF for now. Could be a possible cause of the freezes with so little RAM on board.

And finally - don't get stressed! We should be able to work things out, it may just take a little time. :)

    ~Jes :)

I do my best. There are often a lot of posts, and it is easy to miss details that may be obvious to you but are not to me.

The memory tab was what I did click on to find the 256 Mb figure (didn't get to be a university teacher for nothing, you know :-)). There are a lot of other figures there too, of course - DRAM frequency,DDR, module size, bandwidth etc. - but unless you can be more specific, I can't see what is relevant apart from the 256.

Espresso - OK, it must be great to be sooo smart... how am I supposed to remember what I have to do with Hijack? It does say "save as log file", no? Some things may also be quite clear to me that for you are not so clear, too.

Lots of extras in there, like java, toolbars, CTFMON, etc. could be disabled on startup which would help. Also, go to control panel - add/remove programs...are there any listed in there you no longer use/need ?? if so, uninstall them.

Avast runs a memory scan when it starts up, stop this happening by opening avast, go to menu - settings and ensure you uncheck the memory scan option.

Sheesh...another latecomer. It's all been covered before. Too many cooks and all that.
Actually, I arrived here on page 1. I've just been on holiday since... ;)

Suiko, thanks for the full log - I'm no HijackThis expert (yet ;)), so I'll leave that to people like GunJack, who has some good suggestions for you.

Also, GunJack is correct about needing all the techie details about the RAM. There are quite a lot of different types/speeds of RAM, and only certain ones will work with your particular computer motherboard. It's a bit like you can only put certain types of tyre on a particular car, despite having many brands/sizes available, if that makes sense. :)

Never underestimate the power of the techno-geek... ;)
