"So, maybe you can slow down a little so that we can get some relevant information from the OP such as RAM installed and possible conflicts created by the installation of XP3."
What relevant information do you want and how do I get it?0 -
Check memory by running a scan from Crucial Memory - will tell you how much and what your upgrade options are. I'm sure other firms do similar, but this was always been an excellent resource.
You could also try disabling some of your start-up programs. Just got to RUN in the main menu and type in msconfig & you'll get a list of everthing that runs on start-up and then sits in background gobbling memory - and speed. Lots of programs instal themselves by default in your start-up system - especially instant messaging stuff.
Other than this, delete your browsing history, defragment your hard drive and run some form of cleaner - some good freebies on the computeractive site.

hi James
Thanks for that. I think you will see from earlier posts - yes, I know there are a lot! - that I've done much of this already. System resources used are about 50%, and I have done the startup disables already using a list from Hijack This. Also did defragment earlier, tho will do again when I finally have things sorted out.0 -
Are these the RAM results (from Crucial scan):
Maximum Memory Capacity: 3072MB
Currently Installed Memory: 256MB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Number of Banks: 3
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ Model 8, Stepping 1
CPU Speed: 2086 MHz0 -
Erm.......... Currently Installed Memory: 256MB
You need more RAM. This is a likely reason for the 'freezing'.
What spec of RAM did Crucial recommend? i.e DDR2-533 , DDR PC3200 or......(just some examples)0 -
Exactly, so why on earth are you advocating the installation of a program that absolutely will not fix the problem of freezing?
Surely you should find the root of the problem before insisting that the OP add another variable.
It is this and some of your other posts which lead me to conclude that you have an almost religous zeal about Comodo's Firewall and and an unnatural aversion SpyBot's TeaTimer, that leads you to recommend one and denigrate the other to almost anyone who will listen.
In much the same way you do about Zone Alarm. In fact, in all of my years of use of SpyBot's Tea Timer and Zone Alarm I have not experienced a single conflict.
But then again, I don't go downloading and installing the latest versions of everything.
It's not as if Comodo's Firewall has a perfect record of non conflicting behaviour.
So, maybe you can slow down a little so that we can get some relevant information from the OP such as RAM installed and possible conflicts created by the installation of XP3.
I wanted to install a firewall program as the HIJACK log indicates something dodgy is on the OPs computer and I wanted to see if it would stop it (In case it WAS accessing the net from his compter)
NO program is perfect but Zonealarm sure has more than its fair share of hiccups ~

I never actually said tea timer conflicts with anything, more it would be absolutely pointless to run BOTH spybots tea timer alongside comodos defense mode (overkill if you will). The word CONFLICT was used to describe having to allow (or disallow) something TWICE in order to have the desired effect!
I was under the impression the OP had sorted his ram as (id have to double check this) he said he had done EVERYTHING off a list someone had posted.
Can I just ask what it is your upset with me about?:idea:0 -
But surely the RAM is not the cause of the problem with freezing? I can obviously see how it would work faster with more, but I'm fairly happy with the speed now. Remember I was on Win95 with a 1997 PC till last month :-)0

I'm not upset.
It's just that you are confusing the issue with your partisan views.
What the point of posting a link to a version of Zone Alarm that isn't even included in Updates? I'm still using version 7. I'll leave the new version alone until the bugs are ironed out.
Has Comodo had only one version? Of course not. Indeed newer version had bugs that had to be ironed out. Improvements are being made all the time.
In your eagerness to promote Comodo's Firewall, you overlooked the OP's dearth of RAM.
Under the impression they had 'sorted' the RAM? If you can't even be bothered to follow the OP's progress, you are hardly going to be able to solve the problem.
Just try to take your time.
More RAM is needed and we'll go from there.0 -

Window XP is not Windows 95. If you are reluctant to take my advice, I am happy to leave you to it.
May I suggest that you try to follow the instructions posted? Otherwise the people who can help you will leave the thread and not come back. That has already happened in this case and I'm wavering.
You were asked sometime ago about the amount of RAM installed, but you appeared to ignore that post.
Now I've asked you about the RAM that was recommended and yet there has been no answer to date.0
