I recall several years ago I purchased a sausage roll, prepacked from a local branch of a Scottish chain of grocery stores. The sausage roll was unfit for human consumption as when I got it home and when I bit into it, it was totally mouldy inside, right through and tasted absolutely rotten, nearly puked. Anyway, took the offending article to the local Environmental Health and the guy took a statement from me, he went to the store showed the item to the Manager, they admitted they were in the wrong and the guy said they would buck up their ideas etc etc. Environmental Health chap asked me, what I would like to do when he went to the store to see the manager, I just said just get him to sort thing out. He said, do you want it to go to court, I said, Noooo, just slap their wrists sort of thing, but I was young and a little naive. Didn't even bother with compensation.
I would definitely go to the Protective Services/Environmental Health or whatever they call it now and take the offending article with you. I would not let it go to Tesco, without someone from EH seeing it first, taking a statement from you about it. They have sold food that is unfit for human consumption, never mind the fact that it was made by their suppliers. Your contract is with Tesco, you purchased the food from Tesco and it is down to Tesco to sort it out. Stick to your guns and do not get fobbed off and flannelled. This could have had tragic consequences and I would be absolutely fuming if it was not dealt with in the right way. What about CAB too, they might be able to advise you also. Trading Standards are currently investigating the fact that they have 51% of the meat market in Inverness, so like 51% of meat is bought from Tesco, I think Milton Keynes have 50%. Was recently reported on the front page of our local newspaper here, The Inverness Courier. Hope you get things sorted out to a very satisfactory conclusion, and I hope that your wee boy is ok. May be an idea to get him checked over by a doc or at least a medical report etc, to state that you had him looked over after what happened to him.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0 -

I have dealt with Tesco on this kind of issue. They are honest, they will try to find out where it came from, they will tell you what they find and they will give you compensation.
I think cutting bits off it is daft, either you want to take them to court over this or you just want to report this to them so they can stop it from happening again.
If you want to go to court, keep the thing and go and see a solicitor tomorrow.
If you want to help them to stop it from happening again, take it to the store, fill in the form and leave it with them.Smiley_Mum wrote:He said, do you want it to go to court, I said, Noooo, just slap their wrists sort of thing, but I was young and a little naive. HI again
I've just come back from tesco's and im even more fumming now and will take things as far as i can after that.
i spoke to the girl at the customer service's desk and aksed to speak to the manager.
The manager came over i explained what had happen he just said oops at least he is ok now. then i started to fill in the form and the girl at the desk found it very funny indeed. she kept saying fancy having a bit of wire in the pasta. Then as we got further down the form she asked me for the date of purshase i told her the 23/11/05 the she asked for the sale by date as i looked down the packet i noticed it was the 28/10/05 almost a month out of date. The girl at the desk then said oh dear this just gets worse for us. The manager then said ok we need to send it away for testing (this i was going to let them do but after that display i will take it as far as i can) I told the manager that i would be seeking legal advice and i would be going to see the E.H.A on saying this is was straight on the phone to someone. After he came off the phone he came back and said ok this form will be rushed through for you. LOVE LIFE PROCEED & PROGRESS0 -
So you let your common sense be over ruled by a customer service girl, who rightly or wrongly tried to make the process go smoother by making lightly humored comments. And a manager who summed up the situation "the main thing is he's ok".
These managers are quite often just monkeys in suits. And the CS staff have a difficult job knowing how to handle everyone.
Fine report it to EHA, it will get dealt with just as much as it would have had you left it with Tescos.
As for your ambulance chasing.... I don't wish you luck.0 -

I would just like to point out to you my son choking on wire is nothing to laugh about.
2nd the EHA are more likley to do something unlike tesco'c who did not even say they would offer a re-fund on the pasta.
3rd Just because tesco sorted you out the same would apply in this situation and in others. LOVE LIFE PROCEED & PROGRESS0 -
Personally I would be greatful that there was no serious damage done to my child. These things happen and I agree with Wig on this - Tescos have in the past been very good at investigating were things come from. Give them the bit of wire and stop listening to the paranoia on this thread. I am not saying you are trying a scam but retailers have to protect themselves from an opportunistic and dishonest public looking for a quick buck therefore it needs to be tested properly to find out exactly where in the supply chain this could have come from.
One other thing if you cut the piece of wire then what will be reported is that 'a piece of wire Xmm long was found' - where 'X' is the length of the reduced size (that is the only evidence they have).
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
I will be sending the wire to them once i have had an independant company look at it. All this could have been sorted yesterday if they had just said look we are really really sorry we will do a full investagation. LOVE LIFE PROCEED & PROGRESS0

Photo the piece next to a ruler and make sure you can read it. Or use a standard size item like a coin to gage scale.
Glad your son is ok. Tesco should treat this as top priority. Taking weeks to resolve it is unacceptable and they should immedately recall all the pasta from that manuafacturer.Sense is not common.0 -
No, that's an over reaction. This is one bit of pasta out of billions of bits of pasta. If they start getting more reports coming in,,,then it's time to recall, not on the basis of one incident. and the best thing to do is to give the wire to Tescos straight away so they can quickly identify it. This user is going to delay the process by chasing ambulances. Even giving it to EHA will delay the overall process.0
