Last week at Aldi they had a bottle of Gerwurztraminer for a bargain £3.99. I opened one last night and within minutes felt my chest tightening and becoming breathless. Had a look at the label and there is an allergen warning on there saying "contains Sulphites and Milk products". I get very occasional spells of asthma, usually triggered by colds or flu, but have had problems with sulphites in the past.
This morning I feel like I have a terrible hangover despite only having one glass.
If anyone has any degree of asthma I suggest you avoid this wine like the plague!

In my experience it is almost impossible to find a cheap wine without sul(f)phites. (They are used as a preservative and to make sure the yeast is dead - no accidental bottles of fizzy wine). I'm not sure what the "milk product", perhaps the tart wine has been dosed with lactose, a sugar that the yeast cannot turn into alcohol - as in "Milk Stout".
What is the country of origin of the wine and what is its percentage of alcohol?

It was an Australian wine, Bushland, 13%. I have experienced this before with cheap wine but never as bad as this one.
I remember many years ago I tried making home brew wine and breathed in some fumes from the Sodium Metabisulphate steriliser. That was also very unpleasant and caused the same reaction.
I have a feeling the milk product might be a clearing agent.

Looks like you may well be right:

Besides gelatin, other fining agents for wine are often derived from animal and fish products, such as micronized potassium casseinate (casein is milk protein), egg whites, egg albumin, bone char, bull's blood, isinglass (Sturgeon bladder), PVPP (a synthetic compound), lysozyme, and skim milk powder.[3]

Non-animal-based filtering agents are also often used, such as bentonite (a volcanic clay-based filter), diatomaceous earth, cellulose pads, paper filters and membrane filters (thin films of plastic polymer material having uniformly sized holes).

Living in a "student" house, we used to make home brew beer.
Washing the dustbin in the bath, using warm metabisulphite solution, was a job that could lay you out on the floor with an overdose of SO2.

I did not think it would be a German wine, our Australian cousins can be a bit heavy handed with the additives - such as oak chips in Chardonnay.

I think there are alternatives nowadays. There would have to be really as the SM is very nasty stuff indeed.
Gewurstraminer is a very nice wine but generally not a cheap wine so the bottle at Aldi for £3.99 was too good to resist. Still a good buy for anyone who doesn't have problems with the sulphates, it tasted fine. Asda have a good range of wines in their Special Selection range and they are often on offer at bargain prices, the Chardonnay is often available at £3.99 and I would highly recommend it.

Weve had some of the Premium ice cream this week, strawberry one in a square packet with a rounded lid. £1.99 and worth every penny. Bloody lovely and better than ben and jerrys which i love.

my other favourite are their 49p garlic bread, chopped tomatoes (which were reduce in ours to 31p i think) and always buy the packets of risotto. Couldnt start most days without my honey loops either and get through a packet of bratwurst most weeks. Im an aldi convert.

    Has anyone tried their nappies?

oh nice one we're going to Lidl today to take advantage of some of todays offers!

Idiotic question here but do you need a colour printer for it to work? I've run out of magenta and something else but haven't got round to replacing it as I only ever print out black and white documents.
