- Supermarket : Aldi - been shopping here for a good 6 years now and love it.
- What's good : 95% of Aldi's items are great to be honest. So I'll just add the things that I especially like because of their value compared to elsewhere. Or the foods I enjoy the most.Almat Washing tablets - So cheap compared to proprietory brands but get stuff clean, smell nice and don't give me a rash as other cheap products can.
Fabric softener - Especially the Comfort knock-offs with alomond/jojoba oil. Smell wonderful. The ordinary ones are great too
Washing up liquid - Lasts a good long time and does a great job for the price. Pink Grapefruit is my favourite.
Favourite foods:pesto: Especially - the olive one which is divine. I notice the packaging is changing now though to Cucina, the same as the pasta, so if the producer has changed the pesto might not be so good any moreI only saw 2 different varieties in the new jars, too.
Cheese and chili oatcake bites: - delicious!
Hot smoked salmon: - in particular the peppered one
Baked ham joint: - miles cheaper than the equivalent anywhere else, lovely quality meat, makes a cracking sandwich.
Lightly dusted lemon sole: - got my Mum and Nan hooked on this. Always nice size pieces which is a bonus
49p pots of pate: - price should say it all, but it tastes damn nice too!
Ginger nuts: - double size pack for a piffling price, miles nicer than McVitie's, which just taste of salt and lemon oil these days.
Avocadoes: - rediculously cheap. a quarter of what they are in Sainsbury's.
Continental plum tart: - This frozen beauty is as big as a dustbin lid, weighing in at an impressive 1.25kg. And is £2.99...it's also fabulous.
Hot cross buns: - yummy, nice and soft and not dry like some can be.
Fresh pasta: - Especially the gorganzola and walnut tortelli. - What's not so hot :
Cornflakes - nasty, like cardboard
big pot Natural yogurt - It's not bad as such, just a bit watery.
Chewing gum - it's tough and loses it's flavout fast.
Toasting muffins - disappointing, lacking in substance with lots of airholes and not an especially great flavour either.
soups - unimpressed with both the tinned and fresh soups. Both pretty flavourless.
Aldi's cheese and marg selection is a bit of a let down. They don't have any "normal" spreads, just reduced fat stuff which makes your toast soggy. I do like the Norpak spreadable butter but it's an extravagance at £1.29 for a 500g tub, though of course that's cheaper than the same size pack of Lurpak.
Do need to be careful for pack sizes sometimes though. Flour was the same price in Aldi and Sainsbury's for a long time, 43p. But Aldi's bag is only 1kg where as Sainsbury's is 1.5kg. Aldi's self-raising has dropped to 39p now but Sainsbury's is still cheaper.0 -
Just moved to a new flat, which happens to be near LIDL. It's brilliant. Much better than ALDI, and they even sell branded products like Heinz. Also - they have giant fruit. It's worth a trip just to see apples the size of a baby's head.0

Well you'd love it here we have 9 supermarkets within walking distance, pretty much all the main ones lol.0

our local Lidal gave away packets of tea cakes and several loaves of bread free on good friday. The staff said take as much as you want its only going to be thrown away. On closer inspection the packets had 2-3 days left, so in the freezer most of it went.. very happy with our Lidal:rotfl:0 -
tryed the LIDL near me for the first time....was VERY dissapointed.
most of it was the same price i'd pay in any supermarket, except supermarket's are much nicer places to shop.
won't be going back there again.0 -

I much prefer Aldi to Lidl.0 -
I've never been to Aldi. I like Lidl insomuch as you can buy continental foods there, the sort you may not find in other supermarkets. Their frozen deserts and ice-creams are absolutely amazing.0

I like them both for different things, but I don't think you can beat Aldi for continental meats.I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100
