I go to my local LIDL once a month, to get stocked up on long-life milk, (which is currently 49p a litre carton), and other stuff that we like. While I'm there I check out any bargains. On the whole, their fresh veg and meat, and their processed meats and hams are brilliant. Frozen specials are worth looking out for too, like whole pheasant or lobster at half the price you would pay anywhere else. These are example prices from my receipt this week.

2 pork hocks in sauce - £3.99. They were lovely.
Litre carton apple juice - 50p
Their own decaff instant coffee 100g - £1.55. This is a v. good flavour.
4 Luxury toilet rolls - £1.69 You can probably get cheaper but we like these.
Cooked marinaded pork ribs - £2.99. These are brilliant but messy to eat!
Wholenut plain chocolate - huge bar for 99p. Best I've tasted in ages.
Blossom Hill wines - 3 bottles for £9.99. Excellent value.
    6 Pack of sponge scourers - 55p.
    Pack of 3 mixed peppers - £1.25.
Loose red grapes - £1.99 per kilo.

I suggest it's worth giving it a try. It's a bit like 'trading down' to lower range stuff at your usual supermarket - give it a try and if you don't like it, revert to what you usually get.

Definately agree with this. I buy very little in there but occasionally buy thier own sliced loaf for 85p and whatever veg is on super6 type offers. Otherwise, pretty much everywhere else is cheaper.

Aldi/Lidl don't aim to be the cheapest. They aim to be the best value. On most products they are as cheap as supermarket own brands. What they don't do is compomise on quality just to be the cheapest. It's very rare that you buy something from Aldi/Lidl and are disappointed with the quality - something that cannot be said for some of the value ranges from the main supermarkets, some of which use lower quality ingredients to produce them at a lower price. Look closely at some of the labels you'll see what I mean.

It's normally more meaningful to compare Aldi/Lidl's products and prices with the supermarket own label quality (not value/basics ranges) and here their prices are more than competitive.

There are many items I choose to buy at Aldi/Lidl because they are the best items in their class and if I run out of them I'll wait until I'm next in one of their stores rather than buy an alternative at another supermarket.

The chocolate praline seashells for under 2 quid from lidl are great. Was an amazing bargain when they were £1.39.
    Looking forward to the future.

    ALDI.
Forgot to say, we like the Oakhurst Chicken Kievs, both the original garlic and the cheese and ham. It tastes and looks like 'proper' chicken. Also their 'finest' range pizzas, good range of deli meats and cheeses. Prefer own brand 'twixes' to the original. (Crisper shortbread)
There were earlier mentions for 3 blade refills that fit Gillette Excel. Can someone please confirm that they fit and are they any good? I bought the razors for Dad and DH, now find the blades are very expensive:( Thanks in advance:)

Some years ago they were 'proper' chicken. Whilst they're OKish now, they used to be much much better.

I'm more familiar with Lidl as it's the one I visit most often but as both supermarkets are German they do very good things that the Germans are fond of and do well like:

    Cooked meats
    Chocolate
Ground coffee (the cheapest I can find anywhere at £2.49 for 500 grammes)
    Biscuits and cakes
    Cheese

Their toiletries are very good and I always use their herb-flavoured toothpaste and so are their detergents and cleaning products.

The 1-kilo jars of green Spanish olives for £1.59 are a real bargain and so are the antipasti-type things like artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes.

Their luxury fruit and nut muesli is one of the best I've ever tried

    Agreed.
I've found that usually anything vaguely continental is amazing quality and value - deli meats, olive oil etc.
We only started going for the fruit and veg, but have tried something new every time we visit and we're gradually getting less and less from the other supermarkets.
Aldi chicken seems to have a lot less water in it than anywhere else and costs less.
The curry sauces with the seperate powder in the lid are AMAZING!!!
The breaded haddock/cod is nicer than even branded stuff.
    Pizzas are lovely.
And I can buy a branded loaf of bread for 99p rather than two for a pound elsewhere - I only need one.

And the best thing about it is you can be up and down those four aisles and out in 20 mins without having to negotiate trolley dawdlers.
