  • My OH bought me Lidls haddock and spring onion fishcakes at the weekend, they were delicious.

As he bought them , I dont know how much they are, but they were great!

(They were in the freezer section in a bag, there were 5 in the bag)

I have been shopping at ALDI for about 18 months as it is quicker and easier to get round with a toddler than the bigger supermarkets. I was amazed by how much my shopping bill reduced without compromising on quality. My top buys are:-
Frozen lamb shanks in mint sauce
Summerlite olive spread (same as Olivio)
When this was written (2 Oct 08) I would have agreed, Summerlite Olive Spread was tastier (and more butterish somehow) than nearly any other spread, yet also one of the healthiest. We used to time our Aldi visits by when we were running out of spread!

Shortly after that the formula changed (and the packing with it) and it became very bland. It's still cheap but now it tastes it.
  • I worked as a Lidl manager for nearly two years,

food to avoid - all fresh meat, quality always dodgy
veg quality is dependant on a good manager who orders
properly so could go either way

food to buy - most of the other produce is really good, I keep mountains of lidl mayonaise in my cupboard as im addicted to it. balsamic and olive oil is great as is most of the salami, cheeses and basics like tinned toms, beans, fruit etc. Smoked salmon is great, pasties - give it all a try! ps vanilla icecream with real vanilla pod seeds - used to be in a blue tub - is fab! - also frozen lamb chops

I think that's happening all across the board tbh as manufacturers try to cut costs without cutting profits. Various things were mentioned on another thread, and I said there that Heinz tomato ketchup is very watery to what it used to be. Something to watch out for in all products/stores really. I shall be trying a cheaper ketchup from lidl next time I go.;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

My Aldi don't provide baskets only coin operated shopping trolleys, so if I don't have a coin in my purse I don't go in. I do have a trolley disc but it gets stuck in the mechanism. I would go in more often if they provided baskets.

My husband who is German is delighted that there is a Lidl near us; but he would prefer Aldi. Sadly, Aldi is 10 miles away so not worth it.

His favourite is herrings in cream sauce (on the cool shelf) - try them they are delicious!
And Lentil soup with sausage. Unfortuately, yesterday when I was there they had run out.

In Germany Aldi continuously gets top marks in their WHICH equivalent magazine. I remember when they were selling computers, a few years ago - Aldi (Medion) computers were tested just as good or better than the famous brands.

Also, in Germany Aldi is not considered low-class - people from all social levels shop there, rich and poor alike. I think Germans are less snobbish about their shopping than here in the UK!

Their TV advertising here reflects that attitude, I think.0

I don't think any of them have baskets. I just hunt around for a conveniently sized box. A lot of people just take a carrier bag with them and fill that up as they go around the store.

Health warning - the Bockwurst are loaded with fat. Avoid.

Yum! As a low carber that's music to my ears. Artificially low fat food is not very good for a body.
