Lidl
Good Buys
Large tubs of ice cream (it's lower in fat too!)
Chocolate covered ice cream lollies (very like Magnums at a fraction of the price)
Fruit and veg but you need to use quickly
Large Bockwurst - 6 pack
Tetra pack Orange Juice
Lemonade
Coleslaw and potato salad
Packs of liquorice allsorts
Packs of Marshmallows
Individual chocolate and cream desserts in the chiller cabinet, only 20 odd pence each
Jars of whole baby corn
:T
I avoid laundry and bleach-type products as I'm a bit worried about what might be in them. That could be an unfounded fear but I've never wanted to test it!0 -
couple of things in Aldi i like
Thick & creamy yoghurts - can't speak highly enough about them, gorgeous, but due to the creamy nature their not the healthiest!
red grapes - usually very nice, but tend to wait til they're in the 'super 6' offer, or whatever its called!
fresh orange juice (1litre) - at normal price, you can get cheaper in some of the big supermarkets, but I think it tastes better than most.0 -
Supermarket: Aldi
Top things to buy:
Veg - especially on Super 6 offers
Sweet Potatoes
Thick Sliced Bread
Rye Bread
Beef Mince - cooks with very little fat
Parmesan Cheese
Specially Selected Pizza
Specially Selected Quarterpound Burgers with Stilton Cheese
Frozen Pasta Meals
Olive oil
Aloe Vera Toilet Rolls
Wine - Good range, quality & price
Cola & Lemonade
As you can tell I am a bit of a fan - used to spend over £130/week in Tesco & then top up in Sainsburrys - now I do most of my week's shop in Aldi & top up in Sainsburys & my weekly bill for everything is under £60
The overall quality for most stuff in Aldi is very good & some of their frozen meals are superb0 -
Hi I'm new!!
well I am going to stick my 2peneth in here...and have a moan about Aldi.
I watched a great programme before Christmas about Aldi - their products were tested and ingredients used by cooks and the verdict - the food was great!
So i decided to do a supermarket comparison (I currently shop at Morrisons).
Anyway...I went in the shop, had a good look round and liked what I saw, bought a couple of items...then I visited another shop near by...
...then got a hefty parking fine for having left the area to shop elsewhere- even though i had been in Aldi and did not outstay my welcome of 90free mins!!!! Hence, any savings i was hoping to make had been eaten up by the fine!!!
To add insult to injury a couple of the items i bought were not up to scratch! So i shall not be going there again!!!0 -
Top things to buy from Aldi
Large continental bloomer bread both wholemeal & white
Cakes - Tiramisu cake 99p lovely
Lemon drizzle - now 99p was much cheaper, need to watch use by date but lovely.
Fruit & veg can vary but we all know that
Frozen blueberries £1.79 for 350 gms excellent if they have them
Large frozen cheesecakes yummy
Pretend weetabix
Plants in season
Bunches of flowers
Tools - angle grinders, drills etc.
Computer stuff, (I'm writing this on one of theirs!) You do need to be in quick to get these.
Not sure what to avoid
Top things to buy from Lidl
Large tub of greek yoghurt £1.87 (I think) I know it's 10% fat but just add your own fruit or honey & nuts
Fruit & veg as before
Chocolate bars, my husbands weakness!
Watches & car maintenance stuff such as wiper bades (check sizes) deicer, screen wash etc.
Porridge oats, have now gone up to 35p but nicer than Asda
Frozen salmon steaks
Plants in season
Just be brave you doubters & give it a try!0 -
Not sure if it's been said before (I couldn't be bothered to read through all 20 pages) but I would recommend wine at Netto. They seem to only offer bottles from well-known producers (e.g. Hardys, Jacob's Creek etc) at a price which is much cheaper than you can get in a bigger supermarket.
Also, their stores tend to be a bit of a mess but they do tend to stock brand-name goods instead of continental alternatives like some of the other discounters.0 -
Aldi Ciabatti...can't remember the name of it ..but it is the long loaf, makes approx 4 good size rolls for....59pence...
I have not found anyone who can beat that yet:)0 -
I mainly shop in Aldi and Lidl now and have done for about a year, I do one big online supermarket shop a month - Usually Tesco or sometimes Asda if they e-mail me any free coupons. But the rest is all Lidl and Aldi. I find Lidl's fruit and veg to be unbeatable, its very rare to find any duff stuff, whereas Aldi is a bit hit and miss. Their 39p stuff or whatever it is can be good value but thats a bit hit and miss sometimes as the most popular stuff goes as soon as it hits the shelves. Also we love Lidl's orange and apple juice large cartons, their farmhouse wholemeal bread is lovely and all their meats and cheeses, yogurts etc etc, particularly that natural yogurt in the individual cartons (blue wrapper) its really nice and doesn;t have that sharp taste that some natural yogs do. No one seems to be mentioning Farm Foods. We have one and its great. At the moment all their 4pt cartons of milk are just £1!! Can you believe that. And the kids lunch box filler biscuits etc are so cheap - all well under a £. I also rate Aldi's washing powders and liquids. And our cats like their cat food pouches too, I could just go on and on. Why pay for brand names when other stuff is just as good if not better in some cases.0

Hi I been using Lidl since it arrive in my high street last year.
Real value for money my favourites include- Chicken- large chicken £3.50 would cost double elsewhere, also smoked salmon, sprouts, oranges, satsumas, frozen chips, frozen peas, shellfish, canned stewed steak, jam, honey, biscuits. Did not like their 'cornetto' type ice cream the wafer was like cardboard. Sometimes items not available but our store is becoming very popular and I enjoy the savings.0 -
