Hadn't been to Aldi for ages. Went this week, everything we've eaten so far has been really good.
    In particular:-

Oven steak chips (better than ANY I've had elsewhere)
    Rich Instant coffee.
Thick cut crinkle crisps (these were REALLY nice)
    Blue veined red cheese
    Sandwich fillers (chilled)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I bought the lemon 5 in one dishwashwer tablets for aldi, 40 for £2.99, they are as good as the major brands, (I usually use finish or fairey). The lemon smell is not as strong, but they do not have any of the unplesant smells of the cheap ones, and thay clean well.
  • Supermarket - Aldi

Whats hot: The rich roast coffee - better than any brands
Milk Chocolate Bars- creamy & chocolately, not synthetic.
  • Supermarket - Aldi

    Whats hot:
The rich roast coffee - better than any brands
Individual coffee filters - full of authentic coffee flavour
Milk Chocolate Bars- creamy & chocolately, not synthetic.
    Blackcurrant & Apple Squash - 2lts for 89p - Natural tasting & economical
Cat Food - The mogs prefer the pouches but tins are goos tto.
Olive Oil - First class, delicate flavour & amazingly cheap
2 in1 Wash tabs - for fragrant, soft, clean laundry
Orange/Apple/Cranberrry Juice - natural tasting and not over sweet
Tomato Puree - at 26p a tube - great value and rich & flavoursome
Savoury rice - 38-9p per pack - full of flavour but not oversalted
Own label Irish Cream - think this is £4.99 - really , really nice better than B**leys!
Cheese - tried a wide variety - all excellent and good quality
Part baked bread baguettes/ buns - fab! an inexpensive treat

    Whats not hot
Not very thrilled with some of the fruit and veg - especially carrots and tomatoes - soft and manky the dayafter purchase.
Frozen peas - tough and lacking taste
Clothes - strange sizes and wierd colours
Special purchases - Whilst acknowledging that these are all good quality and good value I am a bit aggrieved with these as the non food section is now approx 50% of the floor space - would prefer personally to see more food choices and less household items as Wilko's are generally as good or better and cheaper to boot!

I eat mega portions of fruit and veg (infact, its all I eat, yes seriously!) but I am yet to find an Aldi/Lidl etc that have fresh fruit and veg that does not either look like its long past any such self life (eg mould, heavily bruised, oily film on apples...), covered in big fat bluebottle flies or the same price as Tescos.

Does anyone else find the same? I live in South East London, I have been to at least 4 of the discount stores, and found the same in each.
  • The Old Kent road store seems to be ok for fruit and veg as does the Catford one. I got a bag of red onions for 20p the other day from the Catford one. And their vine tomatoes always seem to be quite nice.

But if you want nice fruit and veg, I would suggest going down to Lewisham market on Saturdays. My favourite stall is the one opposite Superdrug. They nearly always have nice oyster mushrooms and fab herbs as well.

Oh and avoid the Lidl Bourdeaux. It's vile!

There was an organic veg van in Lidl's car park when I went in the other day, and when I came out they were filling it with fruit and veg out of several trollies. I guess all this produce was going to be taken out of its packaging and passed off as organic in some poor punters' "organic" veg boxes. Easy to do as like organic produce Lidl's is usually not "supermarket perfect".

How disgusting is that. Wish now I had taken note of the compay name and posted it on here but I didn't think of it till later. It wasn't one of the big ones though, just a little local one I think.
Oh dear, here we go again.

Thanks! Already visit Lewisham market quite a bit- though have to say alot of stuff is the same price as tescos, though do find great deals at the end of the day (so long as you know how to weed out the bad from the edible!! some of the sellers are having a laugh!) but a good market -the best for fruit and veg anyway.

It was the Old Kent rd Lidl that I saw the flies- scared me out of the store and I am reluctant to return. I picked up a bag of apples and..... fly city. And not those fruit flies either, big fat bluebottle flies. I think they must have been feeding off something, though didn't stop to check. Yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck!!

Thanks for the heads up on the Bordeaux! will stick to tescos for that! though borough market stocks an excellent bordeaux for £7.99 last time I bought it. I think with wine you do get what you pay for in most cases unfortunetly!
  • If you're looking for lovely apples, I went to the Sunday Farmers' Market just by Blackheath station yesterday and picked up some gorgeous tasting ones. £1.60 a bag so not too pricey at all and it goes directly back into the pocket of the grower.

They also had some difficult to get a hold of veg like some lovely cavelo nero and jerusalem artichokes. Again like other markets, the deals at the end of the day were fab. A whole tray of organic brownies for a fiver! Yum!
