  • i shopped at lidl at the weekend and contrtary to some other posts found the vegetables really good quality and fantastically priced - great red potatoes, carrots, savoy cabbage, swede and leeks all really good and at least 20 to 30 % cheaper than asda if not more

i got some super HUGE pears and apples

perhaps as they have got more popular the turnover of veggies has increased
  • Aldi has loads of veg 39p
    carrots
    cauliflower
    cabbage
    parsnips

I have tried the wacko bars they are like caramel bars. yummy
Dishwasher tabs are really great and half the price of leading brands.
Def going to try the q10 cream sounds good.
Popcorn - sweet is the best 79p for a large bag. Snuck it into the cinema on saturday too :cool:
Trying to think of other stuff. i must say, it would be easier to list the stuff we don't like rather than the stuff we do like. I shop there 90% of the time now.

I do find the bedding an odd shape though, not recommended. The pillowcases could fit a labrador in them

    Happy shopping

    Supermarket: LIDL
I use LIDL fairly often because it's cheap, at also because it sells good quality continental food, particularly Italian (the same as they sell in their Italian shops). No comparison with the big supermarkets in terms on value for money. Unfortunately some of their stuff is really foul, but all worth a try.

A tip: If you want genuine continental stuff check that the label contains the original language, for example their ground coffee does not have description/ingredients in Italian, meaning it’s not good enough to be sold in Italy, while Italian antipasti do. ;)

My top things to buy are:
Cheese, in particular Mozzarella, Parmisan, cottage and Cream cheese

    Greek Yoghurt
Fresh Feta and Peppers Greek salad
Cooked meats: Mortadella, Italian Mixed Cold Meat
Fresh Vanilla Dessert (Custard Cream Pots) :D
Waffles (I’m almost certain that it’s the same they sell at Waitrose, different size but identical otherwise when compared side by side, including ingredients)
    Sliced Brioche
    Pancakes
    Cream crackers and “Ryvita”
    Jaffa Cakes
Sea-shell shaped chocolates (cannot tell the difference from the expensive Guylian) :j
    Biscuits (generally v. nice), Wafers
Smoked fish: salmon (various versions, including with herbs) and mackeral
    Smoked fish
    German sausages
    Beer
    Italian antipasti (mushrooms, artichokes, peppers)
Energy drink (Red-bull type very cheap!)
    Various offers: stationery, cat scratchpost
Fruit Juices: pear juice (waitrose sells at 3 times the price), ACE mixed fruit vitamin juice, cranberry and grapefruit
    Ice Tea
    Roast almonds
    Water (great price)
    Salad bag
    Sanitary towels
    Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Face/Baby Wipes (I use baby’s, much cheaper than ordinary make-up removal once, and bigger!)
    Coleslaw
    Sandwich/Wafer ice cream
Italian Christmas cakes (panettone and pandoro) :xmassmile
Cleaning stuff (kitchen/bathroom sprays, wet wipes, bleach, laundry and washing up stuff looks good, would buy if I did not have an allergy)
    Sandwich bags

My top things to avoid are:
Bread Mixes: was not edible, and I have a Panasonic! (but other people on forum are happy with them)

Most fruit and vegs (expensive! I buy nicer and cheaper at a local Turkish shop)
    Long-life milk (tasted disgusting)
    Courgettes and Aubergines Italian antipasti
    Coffee (ground and instant)
    Rice (poor quality)
Cat Food (not cheaper than supermarkets own brands, and worse quality)
    German Chocolate
    Crisps
    Ice cream (most)
    Fish fingers
    Wheetabix-like cereal
Hydrogenated fats (from reading this forum, I will now start checking labels and might stop buying some of the stuff mentioned above)

    Good one!

Also, on meat (and dairy) products, you can check the veterinary control stamp or so-called health mark. That's the little elliptic stamp (mostly on the backside), which gives you the country of origin in a two-letter code.
    Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_mark

There's nothing wrong with the German chocolate!!!:mad:;)
    E basta!

The ''Greek Delicacy'' jars of olives, cheese, sundried tomato and pepper lack flavour and are filled with sunflower oil!! ick
  • I go to Lidl occasionally to stock up on a few things.

I love their parmesan and their German Black Forest Ham is soooooo tasty. I'm also quite partial to their pates as well.

So today I went back to have a proper nose. I've got their Chianti and their Italian Pinot Grigio, their milk choc fruit and nut (tastier than Cadbury's and far more fruit and nut in it!), their Knight's crisps in Salt and Balsamic Vinegar flavour, the Nuremburg sausages, dry cure bacon as well as a few other things.

Their fresh tomatoes looked pretty good as did the celery I picked up. But the fine beans looked a bit manky. But then again they were manky in Sainsbury's the other day too. Bit low on freezer space at the mo, otherwise I'd have bought the frozen fine beans.

I'll do a taste test later this week and see what it's like.

    Next stop Aldi!

I shopped at Lidl having read the recommendations on this thread and, so far, I can recommend -

    potato salad
    greek yoghurt
    cottage cheese
    humous
    bacon (double pack)
    premium sausages
    ham joint
    choc ices (Magnum type)

I also tried [strike]loads[/strike] a few  of their choc and cake products and they are all absolutely delish -
    Thanks everyone for recommendations

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Supermarket - Lidl

    What to buy -

    Plain tomato pasta sauce
More tomato in it than Tescos, cheaper, tastier and a nicer colour too.

    The chocolate bars
Have a good percentage of cocoa solids in most.

    Anna Marie Chocolate biscuits
Come in vanilla and coffee flavours in a blue box and a wine coloured box. About £1.40 for 9, nice as a treat.

    Smoked salmon packs
Have only tried the standard oak smoked salmon packs but the peppered one is supposedly good too, is recommended on the Lidl website.

Rowan Hill Bakery chocolate caramel shortbread
Just like homemade. Very moreish and for people who don't care about calories. :-)

    Fruit juices
Like the multivit ones. Not too sweet and syrupy.

    Spring Rolls
I just buy the standard vegetable ones, tasty and fine for a quick tea.

    Premium packs of ham
Green and silver wrap, individually priced. Very tasty, quality ham.

    Dried pasta
Use the lasagne sheets and penne pasta, as good as top branded pasta.

    W5 cleaning products
Wash up soap, spray cleaners etc. Most have quite nice fragrances and are as good as top brands.

Formil Colour and Non Bio Washing powder
Have used both with no problems and it washes just as well as any of the big brand names. My children both have skin probs and these products caused no bother at all. Not highly scented but that suits us.

Aldi and Lidl, a world away, and absolutely not to be confused with Netto, which is just cheap and usually nasty.

    Anyway - in Aldi

    Recommend

    Their varied frozen fish dishes
    Muesli
Carlos round frozen pizza - one of the best frozen pizzas IMO - and really reasonable
    Frostys luxury ice cream
    Clothes washing liquid
The fruit and veg can be varied, but is usually as good as any
Jars of cooking sauce - the Korma is one of the best I've tasted and incredibly cheap.
Chicken breasts - seriously some of the best chicken of it's type, better definately than Tesco and cheaper - though obviously nothing like if you support a local butcher.
Carrot cake - this is the best carrot cake I have ever tasted, and knocks the socks off Marks and Spencer - I'm serious!
German beers - nothing over special, but very palatable, and at just over £3 for 6 bottles you can't go wrong
Their weetabix look-a-like - frankly you won't be able to taste any difference.

    Avoid

Cornflakes - you might as well just eat the box it comes in.
Sheepster -You won't be able to tell the difference between Aldi's weetabix and the real thing as it's made by the same company just packaged differently. Also the digestives are made by McVities but packaged with Aldi's own name. You only pay extra in other stores for the advertising.
