It's a matter of taste, but I really hate Lidl's potato salad, it is in creme fraiche and is very sweet. I have big doubts about the quality of a lot of Lidl stuff and usually just go for their weekly specials. Aldi is better quality but has a really limited range -- I can't see anyone doing their weekly food shop there.
  • Lidl's coffee drink is really good, high caffeine content compared to the energy drinks (some higher - cappucino, some lower - latte) but 55p for a 330ml bottle.

A real secret weapon! Can be found in the chilled cabinets.

Seems to be pretty consistent that people don't like the Lidl Seafood pizza which is a shame cos it looks great on the box. Being a lover of seafood and pizza it should be great but tastes weird - flavouring - too much garlic??

It has lots of seafood, prawns, mussels etc but just tastes horrible!! :o
  • 3 Cornish pasties in a packet are the best in the world according to my husband (who is dead fussy). Cumberland sausages, (6 in a pack) were as good as home made ones from a local butcher. Steak mince(just under £2. for 400 g.) is almost 100% meat, no fat at all. Hot cross buns, really spicy and better than any others I have tried. Cheese is exceptionally well priced.

Cannot believe that no one has mentioned this ( from the freezer in Lidl). If you are lucky they have it on offer at £1.00. I buy 4 when they are this price. Cook straight from freezer for about 15 minutes, serve with crusty bread. Aldi has its own version but it is not as good as Lidl.

Other favourites not mentioned by others =
Premium Ham in a tin - cut into 4 or 5 thick slices and grill lightly - best gammon steaks ever.

Best, most choclaty plain chocolate digestives in the world!

Danepak low salt spread - totally yummy and a must for making butter icing.
  • Lidl and Aldi:

Parmesan Cheese - excellent value and superb taste.
    Shortbread - soooooo good!!
BBQ Beef instant noodles - kids love them.
Sliced meat - all very tasty and great value
Fruit juices - fresh in Lidl - esp the multivitimen one is lush.
Cartons of juice - great taste and value
Crisps - esp on special offer
Lidl fresh lasagne - not great but ok for a quick meal.
    Bratties - yum!
Frickedellen - pork or chicken - both are delicious.
Potato Salad in Lidl is great.
Packet sweeties - very good value on party days or for school on birthdays
Milk chocolate with nuts - yum!
Tinned tomatoes are good value and taste good too.
Sliced parma ham/black forest ham is very very good.
Yoghurts are delish and Lidl usually have branded ones on special offer too!
    Mozzarella cheese - lush!
    Balsamic vinegar - great!
Washing powder tablets from Aldi are very good!
    Sandwich bags
Cleaning cloths/dusters/dishcloths - all excellent value
Chicken breasts in Aldi - excellent
Pork chops in Aldi - excellent.
All seasonal veg - sometimes can be a bit ropey but check before you buy!
Ice-creams - all sorts yum yum yum
Aldi - low fat ice yoghurt lollies covered in forest/mixed fruits or orange/mango - these should be bought in great quantities and hoarded as they are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!!!
Aldi Frozen chicken pieces in various flavours - absolutely fantastic!

I could go on and on all day. We lived in Germany for over five years and were introduced to Aldi and Lidl there -we do a lot of our weekly shopping in both now and think they are both very good value for money. Fab fab fab!!

One of the very very few things from both that we just do not like are the jars of pesto - we are pesto addicts in our house and we have taste tested all versions from all major supermarkets including aldi and lidl - I do mean ALL and the best one we've tried is a supermarket own brand from Sainsburys.

    ALDI

    Recommended
    Tinned tomatoes
    Tinned ravioli
Korma sauce (truly divine, couldn't get any last week as sold out)
    Frozen pizza
    Frozen chips and potato wedges
    Apple juice
    Hazelnut chocolate
Oscars Peach Schnapps, not exactly like Archers, but nice enough
    Caramel shortcake squares
'Salt your own' and 'Be Light' crisps
    Mature cheddar cheese

    Avoid
White bread, goes hard around the edges after a day. Wholemeal bread is ok, but sliced really thinly.
Fresh fruit and veg, seems to go off in a very short space of time.

Their cereal bars are also a bit hit and miss - the half chocolate covered ones are nice, but there are others which are vile - too chewy and sickly.

    From Lidl I love:

The beer and wine's fab

    Big tubs of yoghurt, :j

edam cheese is a steal :D

and the free range eggs coz they a fraction of the cost at the rob dogs place - talking of Tesco and slightly off tack, anyone tried their 'discount' range. Don't bother. It might be roughly same price but not the same quality. YUK!
  • Lidl:

Smoked Salmon - 1/2 price of anywhere else and as good, if not better
Frozen Pizza - not the veg or spinach - but the others are great
    Sliced Cheese - Edam/Gouda
    Sport Shampoo/Soap - at 13p a bottle!!!!
