1st. & 2nd in the "Which" league table - JVC v Panasonic
The JVC comes in at £200 http://www.digital-point.co.uk/model.php?ID=832 (Free delivery) It looks to be a very similar spec as the Panasonic E55 for £179 - Anybody got any further comparisons between these two ???A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0 -

If you disagree, that's up to you.
I think we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm just concerned that your comments may have put people off the Liteon 5005 bargain for no good reason.
You said: "...the Liteon has poor playback and recording quality..." That's a statement of fact, the way it's written. I can vouch for my observation that the playback quality appears as good as the original broadcast. You can't get better than that, so in the spirit of this web site, why pay more?
You also said: "...you can get better." another statement of fact?0 -

I'm wondering why the Which? report gave the Liteon 5005 only 49%. I haven't got access to the report, but here are some possible reasons, none of which would figure in my buying decision. Or, at least, I wrote them off as unimportant for my needs:
1. The Liteon 5005 reportedly only has a mono Nicam tuner, so you can't record directly from the Liteon in stereo. Liteon corrected this with the currently more expensive 5006. The 5005 is presumably being sold off cheap beause it's old stock. It doesn't bother me because who wants to use a non-digital Nicam tuner; stereo, mono or otherwise? I feed in a digital TV signal from my Freeview receiver and get glorious stereo that way. If I record direct off a digital camera, from old VHS hi-fi tapes, or any other external source, they will all be in stereo too. A non-issue but an excuse for Which to write it off.
2. As mentioned above, the 5005 has already been replaced with the 5006 model. I guess Which? would prefer 'current' models like the JVC and Panasonic. But technology is moving so fast that they will all be 'obsolete' within a few months, yet I hope to go on using the Liteon 5005 for several years. It's a bargain.
3. From what MarkP said, it sounds like Which? didn't rate the recording quality as highly on the 'ecnonomy' recording modes, like cramming up to 6 hours of material on a single DVD. I would stick to 2 hours per DVD (SP mode) so it's a non-issue for me. The poor quality of '6 hour' mode is inherent in the technology.
4. It doesn't have a big brand badge on the case.
Let's not forget several key strengths of the Liteon 5005:
(a) it can record in lots of different modes like DVD-R and DVD+R for maximum compatibility with other DVD players.
(b) it has a Firewire socket for recording directly from a digital camcorder.
(c) simple hacks are readily available to make it multi-region and, hopefully, remove macrovision protection.
Regards

I'm not knocking anyone's personal opinions, but why do some folk lay such great store by the often very odd conclusions arrived at by Which Magazine? Personally I wouldn't buy a car because Top Gear said it was great - I'd try it myself first! DVD recorders would be no different. If I couldn't see it in operation in the shop, would I buy it? Hmmm. :-/0

Nice one Hemlock - The comparison link between the JVC & the Panasonic has convinced me that the JVC is worth paying the extra few quid for. Your link also found a price of £189 inc VAT & del which looks to be about the cheapest around. Thats at:- http://www.hiwayhifi.com/site/product.asp?section=2&cat=26&sub=192&prod=23444&ref=kelkoo
Looks like it's handbags at 10 paces for MarkP & George Bray then ???A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0 -
Thanks Christy
Further to the raging debate between the two protagonists, here is a link to a comparison between the four leading contenders so far…

Further to my last post - The JVC for £189 is the black model, I have just ordered the silver one at http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index.asp?modelcode=JVC-DRM10S&affiliateid=76
It's £192 but you get the DVD IRobot free when it's released on the 3rd. Dec.A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0
