For £180 I'd be aiming for the Pioneers/Toshiba/Panasonics at Richer Sounds personally, fair enough if you are wanting to spend £120 go for the lesser brands0

I would recommend the panasonics with the dvd-ram format simply for the beauty of their time slip ability.I was quite sceptical about this function untill i actually used it and now i find it a godsend.0

hello everybody ,
just to let you all know that ive been building loads of pcs over the past few years and have used all the various liteon drives in that time and in my opinion they make some of the best cdrw and dvdrw drives going.
Also the liteon can record to cdr in vcd and svcd format.
We have bought a liteon for my father in law for xmas and to be honest i would gladly swap my philips dvd recorder for the liteon one.
btw goto https://www.vcdhelp.com and search dvd recorders for liteon 5005 for more info on formats it reads and writes etc .
hope this helps.Val0 -

Just been to Argooooos in Stoke on Trent and got the Liteon Recordable DVD unit. really simple to set up and had it recording within a few minutes.
Records on DVD+RW and DVD-RW.......WOW.
Recording quality in HQ mode which will give you 2 hour per 4gb disk is exactly the same as watching SKY. Set to 4 hours is still very good and 8 hours is about the same as standard video.
Very nice remote control. Unclutered and clear buttons make it very nice to use.
Faily fast responce on playback and instant record. Has input for analogue TV and RF output. Has switchable 5.1 sound as well as digital optic audio output.
Has 2 scart sockets on the back.I have a DIVX DVD player going into LITEON Recorder, then out into SKY Digibox and then out from the Digibox, into TV. So 3 items all running into 1 scart on the TV.
I have used LITEON CD re-writters on different PC's for a few years without no problems, so if this unit is anything to go by, there wont be any problems.
Paid £119.00 and got a £10.00 gift voucher so really the price I paid was £109.00. Cheaper than the DVD recorder that goes on sale at ALDI next Thursday for £115.00! These were on sale for £199.99 then reduced to £149.99 now at the great price of £119.00. You can't go wrong. ::)All I need to find out now, is if it can be turned into a multi region player. I will post a link when I do ::). ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D10/10 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
UPDATE>>>>>>>>
You can make this unit multi-region tooooo. Here it is:
Enter "Setup" menu on the screen.
Scroll down and highlight "Exit".
While "Exit" is highlighted enter 2,9,6, and 0 and press "Enter".
A hidden menu pops up and you can select your region.

Records on DVD+RW and DVD-RW as well as being DUAL LAYER......WOW.
Dual-layer? are you sure it's not just dual-format?
no mention on Lite-On's technical specs?

Only thinking about getting one of these, however this might help those of you who already have bought one.
It's a suggested hack to make it multi region - I cannot vouch for this particular one obviously but have used hacks from this site on two previous machines successfully.

Hi Lelly_2, thanks for your post.
Yes I do think the Panasonic DMR-E55 is a better bet than the Liteon for three reasons.
Firstly it does DVD-RAM which I have already spoke about, secondly it does Videoplus which the Liteon doesn't and thirdly the Liteon has limited editing compared to other machines which in my opinion is a big drawback as well.
The only drawback with the Panasonic is the lack of DV input for your camcorder, and the DMR-E65, which does have it is quite a bit more expensive because it has some slot thing as well which I can't see myself needing.
Anyone know anything about the JVC DR-M10. I have discovered that this does DVD-RAM as well, and also has DV input, Videoplus and editing so ticks all my boxes. I haven't found any reviews for it yet though. It is about £190 at the moment, but I expect all these to drop quite soon including the Panasonic.
I think I might just hold out a little longer. Now Dixons has stopped doing VHS, my guess is all retailers will follow suit in the next few months and prices should then drop even more, with the increase in demand.
Cheers
