johnllew dont forget though if you go under £100 at argos you wont get your £10 gift voucher to spend next time. I nearly did this when using nectar points as well as a gift voucher this morning bill came to £101. close call nearly missed out.
No, the price I quoted was the net price. Say you buy £120 worth of vouchers to buy the DVD recorder; they will cost you £108 net on your Trustcard. You'd still get the £10 Argos voucher because the price you're paying is over £100 (being £119.99), but the net cost to you will be £108 (gift vouchers from Lloyds TSB) less the £10 Argos voucher (their promo) = £98.

As this is the GREAT DVD recorder hunt, can anyone advise whether there is a substantial difference between the quality of the recorders? I looked at Richer Sounds and there is a Phillips with £487 off. My goodness!!

For your information, follow the link below for a professional review of the Liteon LVW-5005 DVD Recorder.

The best format of DVD Recorder is DVD-RAM which only a few manufacturers do at the moment, namely Panasonic, JVC and Toshiba.  The Liteon does all the other formats except DVD-RAM.

I recall that a lot of people recommend Panasonic DVD recorders. But having just bought a Liteon unit from Argos, the quality is so close to the original broadcast, that I see virtually no scope for further improvement.

If you want to know more about DVD-RAM, and why it is better go to

I think the picture quality is, to the naked eye, about same, but it is the extra features and technology that make the difference.

I am no expert by the way, but I have been doing some research.

I am concerned that only two manufacturers have used the dvd-ram technology...I would have expected Sony to have done the same if this is the way forward??? I know the Panasonic has a very good write-up what is your opinion Mark?

Is it a good idea to get a digital widescreen deal with dvd recorder?

Sony have - and + /RW which covers all eventualities for disc use at least. I am interested to hear your comments. You usually get what you pay for in this life, if you are going for a cheapie I would suggest you go for 5 year guarantee on these products...don't usually bother ordinarily...have been told to steer clear of Philips by the way. ::)[flash=200,200][/flash]
  • i have had a panasonic dvd recorder for 2 1/2 years with no problems at all,i would recommend them, especially the latest model with inbuilt hard disc,80gb i beleive and a lot less money than the £699 i paid!! dont hum and ha,get yourself one and you will never look back! ;D

I'm fast coming to believe that you DON'T generally "get what you pay for". You often get a lot more, when buying an 'entry level' or 'bargain' product like the Liteon 5005 DVD recorder. I doubt if Sony or Panasonic recorders use higher quality components or are likely to last longer, even though they can cost over twice the price. You're paying for the badge. Sony electronics are not built like they used to be. Everything is lightweight, throw-away technology these days. A 5 year guarantee would be a waste of money in my opinion. The replacement cost of a DVD recorder might be only £50 - £75 by then. Better to throw it away in the unlikely event that it breaks, and buy a new one.

Sorry you paid so much for your DVD recorder! isn't it always the way when you buy early in the market. I am still wondering whether to hold off until after Christmas when the sales start? ;D
