  • Thanks Christy

Further to the raging debate between the two protagonists, here is a link to a comparison between the four leading contenders so far…

Thanks for pulling together the comparison BUT:

The Liteon 5005’s wide range of formats (a key point) should have been clearly listed as dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw, vcd and svcd. JVC and Panasonic are the poor relations here. The only thing the Liteon doesn’t have is DVD-RAM.

My Liteon 5005 has also proved itself to be multi-region, straight out of the box, so they got that wrong too. It plays NTSC region 1 discs.

It gets worse. The 5005 has progressive scan but the kelkoo comparison site left that out too.

And they don’t even list the firewire socket for camcorder input, another great feature of the 5005.

    How misleading!
  • I'm normally a Sonyphile but I cant fault the Lite-on i got yesterday.. apart from it is a bit lite :-[ :-[ as a poster said earlier, I might just whip the lid off and put 500gms of baffle waffle in.. :o:o Oh and I used the £10 voucher to buy the 5xDVD-RW discs argos are flogging. Personally I would like a Naim DVD5 at £2300 but it doesn't even record anything

    >:( >:( for that much...

    IGGY

PS ive having to read this in wide screen BTW.. on my 22" Plasma LCD woptop monitor
  • any of these litons left anywhere? ive searched all my local argoses but theres none about and im desperate to geto ne.
    Waddle you do eh?

    With respect!
You only have to click on one of the images, look around and a full description will be revealed. The idea was to give a snapshot of the main points - not a guided tour.
for instance, here is the full description of one of the LiteOn's http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=78146&_LOC=UK

Sorry, I didn't mean you were misleading people, I meant that kelkoo's poor summary was misleading. The summary should not be misleading, even if the full product spec is more accurate. People could be put off by the summary and many would be unlikely to want to read lines and lines of detailed specifications.

JVC and Panasonic are big names from the past. JVC made good cassette decks in the 1970s, for example. But DVD recorders are akin to re-packaged, scaled-down personal computers. Liteon are a leading light in that field.

You might be right (though with the exception of films) but the liteon has the firewire socket so I think the ability to burn dvds of your home movies would be very useful to alot of people!

I found this player to be pretty good especially for the price! Very pleased with the quality and user interface. Having said that I've just returned mine as I couldn't get my TV to autoswitch to widescreen when playing DVDs and watching SKY. I also missed a few features from my VHS such as videoplus, and automatic programme titling.

However I did find a few links that other users might find useful; a lite-on forum and a hack (for the brave) which disables macrovison so you can record commericial recordings (obviously to backup your own originals - wouldn't condone piracy!!!).

... which is exactly the the kind of machine I'm after, the problem is, if you read most of the forums on Pace, the buyers are not very happy bunnies, especially since their last software download, which has sent most machines into freefall and Pace hasn't an answer for the next few weeks. Alledgedly, their after sales and technical support leave a lot to be desired. So that leaves Humax... But I digress, this is not the forum for this argument. Back to DVD recorders?...

I had 2 Pace analogue sattelite receivers, both of which gave up the ghost after a year or two. I personally would not touch their stuff with a barge pole !
