Hi Lelly_2, thanks for your post.

Yes I do think the Panasonic DMR E55 is a better bet than the Liteon for three reasons.

Firstly it does DVDRAM which I have already spoke about, secondly it does Videoplus which the Liteon doesn't and thirdly the Liteon has no editing facility which in my opinion is a big drawback as well.

The only drawback with the Panasonic is the lack of DV in for your camcorder, and the DMR E65, which does have it is quite a bit more expensive because it has some slot thing as well which I can't see myself needing.

Anyone know anything about the JVC DR-M10.  I have discovered that this does DVDRAM as well, and also has DV in, Videoplus and editing so ticks all my boxes.  I haven't found any reviews for it yet though.  It is about £190 at the moment, but I expect all these to drop quite soon including the Panasonic.

I think I might just hold out a little longer.  Now Dixons has stopped doing VHS, my guess is all retailers will follow suit in the next few months and prices should then drop even more, with the increase in demand.

    Cheers

The Liteon DVW does have a DV input which you plug your Digital Video Camera in. You can then control the camera from the Liteon Remote Control.

The Liteon does have a facility to edit but this olny goes as far as deleting chapters. The length of the chapters can be pre set by the user. ;)

  • I bought a Liteone from Argos yesterday and find it to be quite a noisy machine, is this typical of a DVD recorder ?
Old Faithful we roam the range together,
Old Faithful in any kind of weather,
When the round up days are over,
And the Boulevard’s white with clover,
For you old faithful pal of mine.
Giddy up old fella cos the moon is yellow tonight,
Giddy up old fella cos the moon is mellow and bright,
There’s a coyote crying at the moon above,
Carry me back to the one I love,
And you old faithful pal of mine.

Rumour is that Staples are doing a Relisys RDVR250 DVD Recorder for £89.99 ...according to the DVD bargain forum...may be worth a look....sorry no link or proof as yet.
Staples does alot of business from Rumours, and my experience, that's all they are....Rumours.
After the fiasco with the free gift from Staples and my very exspensive £3.85, 6inch plastic ruler, on principle, I would never buy anything from Staples, even if they paid me to take it away. I am very sore and bitter.....LOL

Are you refering to the fan on the back. Yes I could hear this, but once I shrouded it in blankets and shoved it inside the video cabinet and put the ear muffs on, which are supplied with the unit, I could only just hear it.  :o When the telly went up to full volume, I could not hear it at all! :-/
Just kidding...... ;DOnce the unit was inside the video cabinet, no noise. Yes you can hear the disc spinning up, but for a cheap mech it is pretty good. You gets what you pay for. Still give it 10/10/ ;)

  • I was in Staples yesterday and bought my husband a DVD recorder on a whim. It cost me £89 (or maybe £90, not sure) AND I got 20% off because they were having a special offer day!!(sorry, the 20% will have finished now)

I have sneaked a look in the drawer where it is hidden and it is made by Relisys - unfortunately husband lurking so can't provide any more details at the moment.

I only bought it because the assistants were all whispering about it !! No idea if it will be any good but from this chat thread, I reckon I've got a bargain!!! :):)

So it seems we have a sub £90 recorder after all ;D
  • hello everybody ,
just to let you all know that ive been building loads of pcs over the past few years and have used all the various liteon drives in that time and in my opinion they make some of the best cdrw and dvdrw drives going.

I can relate to what you said, after taking the top off the Liteon 5005 I bought yesterday.

It comprises only a few parts and really amounts to a scaled down PC in a box, with a case that makes it look like a VCR:

    (a) a fairly robust looking power supply, providing standard PC voltages. Unless, the Sony and other 'big brand' units weigh a lot more, their power supplies are unlikely to be any better, if as good. Moreover, if the power supply ever fails (big brands often do) then I will be able to fix the deck by replacing the power supply with one out of any old PC.

    (b) a Liteon DVD rewriter which looks just like the units for a PC. So the great Liteon reputation is very relevant here.

    (c) a mainboard/motherboard which looks fine.

That's all there is to it. Forget brand snobbery.

wilko99, I suggest you read my post again. I didn't say the Liteon hadn't a DV input, it is the Panasonic DMR-E55 that doesn't.

I take your point on the editing and should have wrote limited editing compared to the other machines.
