I have been using the Sky credit card for a couple of years now, you get 1% off your monthly Sky bill with it (more specifically £5 off for every £500 you spend). There are also other alternatives like free box office movies. Obviously it's no use if you don't use Sky, but if you do it keeps the bill down nicely.0

we had a letter last week , stating that sky points was going to be discontinued.
So I have got an Amex card. But miffed that soo many shops don't accept AMEX... so looking at getting a different card to replace the Sky card still.Give somebody a hug it costs nothing

Hi, I have an amex card which I used last year to book holiday accomodation in the first 3 months during it's 5% cashback period. This was succesful as I received almost £100 last month in the account.
I'm looking to book flights again now for next year, and then book in April/May other things like accomodation etc.
I wanted to get cashback for these purchases.
What are my best options? does the egg card compete with my amex card, which is 1.5% cashback unless that has changed.
Can I close the amex and apply again and get the 5% cashback? Then close it again and reapply next year when i'm booking the accomodation etc?
It seems unlikely that amex would allow that!
I know I could get my wife to apply for an amex card.
I also have a tesco platinum cc that we use.
How can I get the most cashback from these purchases?
It will be about £1200 now and about £2000 next year.
thanks in advance.0 -
Can MSE check the following asap and if true remove the amex card from being listed as the winner of the best cashback card.
amex informed me that all new cards have a credit limit of £700. I complained to amex that this is underhand ie to offer 3 months 5% cashback up to max spend of £2000 but to not notify there is a credit limit of £700 - which also cannot be increased for 6 months. Amex refute that this is underhand behaviour.
My new amex card had a credit limit of £9k but did I not activate it: when I checked with amex CS they told me the 3 months at 5% started on activation. When I did activate it CS said I was mislead or I misunderstood and that the period started when the card was issued but I could cancel and apply again. So I did but this. When the new card arrived my credit limit was £700. Now I only have a few credit cards and never have loans apart from a small mortgage. This is the case for 30+ years. I phoned amex and asked it the limit of £700 was a typo as they sent my wife a card with "Mr" on it. I was told by amex CS that all new customers have a credit limit of £700. I've since applied for a Tesco card and this has just arrived and with a decent credit limit ie it is amex that has decided on the lower £700 limit and not my credit rating.0 -

You can still get the 5% cashback, you just don't wait till you get your statement to make a payment i.e.
week 1 - spend £700, pay £700
week 2 - spend £700, pay £700
week 3 - spend £700 - wait for statement to pay if you want to take full advantage of the interest free period
Maybe not the most convenient way to use the card, but still a way to get your full 5%My new amex card had a credit limit of £9k but did I not activate it: when I checked with amex CS they told me the 3 months at 5% started on activation. Without the details of the date, time, name of the person you spoke to it'll be difficult to substantiate this. I've had a look through the current card's T&C's and can't find any reference to rules on cashback (rebates) dates (although did spot a clause prohibiting the use of balance transfers from another card to make the minimum payments which is worth keeping a note of).
Their website does say "Subject to the above a rebate of 5% will be payable to you by us on all transactions made in the first 3 months up to £100 and applied at the same time as any annual rebate" which leaves it ambiguous - you can't use your card before you activate it, so I think you've got grounds to make a formal complaint that they're not being flexible with you when you have been wrongly advised and there's no definition of whether the "start" date is the date of the application, account being opened, card being activated on their website or in their terms & conditions. Inform them that as a resolution to your complaint you would be willing to accept a 5% rebate on all purchases showing on your first 6 months statements on your old 9k card, the rebate to be made by manual credit at the end of the 6 month period rather than rely on any complex adjustments to their automated anniversary rebate procedures"A child of five could understand this. Unless this has changed in the last fortnight whoever you spoke to is talking guff. Received mine 2 weeks ago with a credit limit just under £4000.0 -

Just create a positive balance by paying say £2000 so your total available credit will be £2700, you'll loose the interest free period but its less hassle. I've done this will Capital one before to pay for health insurance.0 -

I think people have reported being able to close and reapply for the Amex card fairly close together - your T&C's might mention if there's a restriction on you applying if you've recently held a card with them."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0
