Apologies, I stand corrected, it is currently mentioned. Though why there are "cashback credit cards", "credit card rewards" and "credit card freebies" pages, all much doing the same thing (with an awful lot of overlap)... doesn't exactly make this stuff easy to find. It also does not anywhere mention the ongoing 1%/2% back (which is presumably why it is on the freebies page, not rewards).
My point remains - this card is arguably better and the rewards more useful to more people than other cards mentioned in the two main credit card cashback and rewards articles (ie the two in big titles here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/?tab=4). Why offer a card to a moneysaver that gives a discount on a Saab in a more prominent article over one that gives money back to spend on a competitively priced site selling books, DVDs, etc, AS WELL AS a £15 voucher.0 -

The answer is that everyone is not YOU and people have different needs.
A lot of people (like me) don't want points or miles.
As an example I have found airmiles almost impossible to use beacuse the charges are usually more than no-frills flights from my local airport.
Over the last 12-24 months I've found Amazon & their market place almost always chepaer than play (and I do shop around EVERY time).
So a definite vote for cash in hand for me and I like it being split out that way.
Sorry it's not presented how you want it but I hope I have explained why other people might find it useful.
There is no point to my mind in having a 2% discount on play when I can get things 10-20% cheaper on ebay or amazon marketplace evry single time.0 -
Thanks both for your patient
replies. I can see the purpose of each article but the confusion arises when a card like the play.com card, which to all intents and purposes looks like a "reward" card is not included on the "rewards" page.
I'm not interested in short term freebies and prefer long-term stable rewards (if not cashback which is becoming a rarity) so I can keep my cards down to a minimum - I know some are happy to take the freebie and then go elsewhere, but I can't be the only person with this view! Ultimately I only found out about the play.com card (which seems like a good reward card to me, which is what I was looking for) from this forum as it was only listed on the freebie page.0 -
Not sure if this is discussed on here, certainly doesn't seem to have been so recently.
I have a few cash back credit cards and have been trying to get a better than standard cash back rate, giving various reasons; i.e similar to the introductory offers that some of the providers have or have had, but not necessarily as high.
I've found that regular customer service staff will say that they have only heard of this in exceptional circumstances, and may give me an alternative number to speak to people who deal with departing customers.
From Amex, the best offer I've had so far is a £50 M&S voucher on the understanding that I will continue to use the card. However, recently I was involved in the same discussion for another account holder and it seemed to be indicated that improved cashback could be offered. When I called, and I spoke to the same person, who indicated that there is the possibility of getting an improved cash back rate, was that offers can change frequently ! However, I'm inclined to beleive that the offers may be more tailored to the person, their history with Amex and their spend, and what little Amex can get away with. Although with the offer made there didnt appear to be any enforceable conditions on the gift voucher offer - maybe just a black mark if I didn't do as I said...
For Capital One, I'm not getting much luck from their Philippines or India call centres (as expected), but have been advised to call and ask for a manager, and these would be based in the UK. So I will need to try again during regular business hours.
So far not much luck.
I just wonder if anyone has gone down this route and had any different outcome and can offer any advice ?
This is on-going for me as I think pushing Amex more wont help and I'll see what is possible with Capital One.
To be honest, I think the best route may be to cancel the Amex, leave it for a week or so and apply again. Each time I've mentioned this I have been told have to wait 6 months, but recently on here it has been stated that has not been the case for the poster. And a few years ago, I'm pretty sure I didn't wait that long between cancelling and re-applying. Also, previously it was worth it for the QuidCo cashback, but alas no longer, well £5 now I think.0 -
I think I've had a couple of sweeteners itro £30 - £60 - I think Amex credited my account with £30 if I didn't cancel it - I was quite impressed but just hung onto the card for a few months and then cancelled it then. You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...:cool:0

I'm thinking of getting the play.com credit card, as this seems the best option for me. I need to pay for my car insurance with it asap. Can anyone tell me how long would it roughly take to get the card?0

Hi,
I have never had a credit card as i was always taught "if you dont have the money, then dont spend it!"
Obviouly i am older and wiser now, recentley married so i need to take the plunge, although i have no idea which card would be best for me.
I would pay the balance off each month and have no outstanding debts etc...
Your input would be greatly appreciated.0 -
Have been turned down from both Barclaycard and Amex, possibly due to my lack of credit history (it would be my first card). Now looking into the alternatives, and Bank of Ireland's 0.5% looks like a fair bet.
However couple of questions:
- Leeds Building Society seems to be offereing the same cashback terms as BOI - how come this is not mentioned in the guide as an even better offer?
- You can get the BOI card if you're an existing Barclays customer and can't get the Barclaycard... but can you get the Barclaycard if you already have the BOI one?
Cheers!0 -

If you're paying the balance off each month you do right to look a cashback credit cards. You can set up a Direct Debit to automatically pay the full amount off each month which makes life easier. You might have a problem getting one if you've never had a card before, they look for evidence of your credit history - so if you've never been in debt it counts against you (!) A mortgage or any other type of loan might suffice though.

Amex looks good for new customers but is not accepted everywhere & I think you have to spend a min of £3k in the year.0 -
Hi Guys,
The anniversary of my Amex has just gone and I was surprised to see my cashback disappear from my account (and not into my pocket either!). I investigated the MSE article again and it says minimum spend is £3,000. Has this always been the case? Its not like me to miss something like this. I just used the card for the first three months and then put it away in a drawer until the anniversary. I could easily have put £3,000 on it over the year if I'd had known this, but I went onto a better cashback CC.
I know a lot of the rules changed some time this year, such as household income, was this one of the things added or is it an old rule? Wondering if it is worth ringing up or not.NST September: SFD 17/20, food £62.87/£60, travel £61.55/£40, Outings £39.80/£100, Allotment £7.17/£30 Other: £42.32, Meditation ?/30.
