I got the Amex Platinum card.
Big disappointment was to discover that they gave me a credit limit of £700 for the first 6 months!
They say it's not due to my income (higher than £20K) but this is the 'normal' procedure.
I would say this is the clever procedure!!! This is not fair at all!!!

In this way I cannot use the card as I planned to, and I'm not able to get the best cash back deal:
'a bonus of 5% (5p per £1 spent) on everything for the first three months'

I don't know if I'm the only one out there with this issue but I believe they use this 'trick' with a lot of people!!

    BE AWARE!

I didn t have anything like this. Card was issued with £10,700 limit...no questions asked.

Although i did get my card before xmas last year....so maybe they were more eager to hand out the cards then ?

mmm ... I have a Shell VPower Card and a Shell Citi Mastercard. Each month my Citi credit card statement is credited with the last months cashback total, hence reducing the total. So I don't have to spend it at Shell ?

I use the card all the time for non fuel purchases for the 1% cashback.

    Works very well for me
I can confirm this as I do the same.
  • I've just received my new AmEx cashback card, I noticed when I logged into my account that it is offering £20 cashback for recommending a friend. I was thinking about taking Martins advice and getting my husband to apply to maximse the 5% cb offer after my 3 months so hopefully this offer is still on.

  • Apologies if this has been mentioned before but.. the Amex Platinum cashback card now seems to have a required salary of 30k? I could have sworn that it was 20k only a couple of months ago, and there is a recent post in this thread (#222 dated 21/04/09) indicating that the poster believed it was 20k at that time.

Does anyone know if this is something that changed recently and if it is here to stay or not? Has anyone recently been accepted for this card with a salary of less than 30k?

If it's here to stay it rules me out and I imagine a few others too :(

I've just had a quick skim through their website and cannot find anything to this effect.

Sorry Nicky I didn't quite understand that - do you mean that you can't find a reference to it being 30k now, or an indication that it used to be less before?

If the former then I am seeing it on the application form and the "full details" page. Since I'm new the forum software won't let me link those, but clicking the link from the main cashback cards article to the Amex Platinum lands me on the page I'm looking at.

If the latter then.. yeah, that's just what I remember but it seems to be supported by others earlier in this thread.

You're right, it used to be £20k and is now £30k. Not sure when the change occurred.

I just closed mine last week with a view to opening it up again at some point in the future. Could be a few years off now!

I didn't think that Aldi took Credit Card Payments so there will be no earning there!

You can certainly now use VISA and Mastercard at my local ones - just not AMEX.

  • I have a Capital One cashback credit card which gives 5% for the first 3 months, then 1% on all purchases. This is not mentioned in the list of cashback credit cards. Anyone know why?
