oh and in the day of the Midland, wernt ppl savers and not spenders? didnt that generation of ppl live within their means generally? did customers then lie like they do now to obtain funds? wasnt there loyalty to one bank rather than tarting between 10 of them to manipulate accounts and earn a quick pound?

Indeed, I agree that was the situation in general, but who has done the lending to these people? Who has offered these deals? in recent times.

The financial institutions, I am sorry to tell you, I do accept that HSBC may nor have been as bad as some, but they have still got their fingers burnt by all of this.

do you hold the same level of contempt for, i dunno, supermarkets for putting the prices of beans up or maybe councils for putting up rent again, ppl have a need for a product and they choose to purchase.. whats so wrong with that?

I agree that if somebody has a " need " for something then things can be difficult, but, how many people actually " need " say a Plasma TV or a Designer Handbag.

Most of the credit that has been indulged in has been spent on things other than true " need ".

The banks have been happy to fund this spree.

Banks did not get in this mess before they all jumped on the greed bandwagon did they?

    ...

This would never have happened back in the days of the Midland Bank, so it is futile blaming customers for taking the easy option of easy credit, that is the fault of the banks IMO.

Yes, failures of the financial system are an entirely new thing, and not a natural product of the system.

There were no issues in 1825. Or 1929. Or 1992. Or 1997.

Not imposed by the banks own incompetence/greed though, like this time.

We are not talking about communist Russia here as that collapsed for a whole host of reasons but mind you it does have a lot in common with the banking sector.

As for the banks Inactive is right let me give you an example. We have a Barclays manager here and maybe they can explain there business ethics with white racists in South Africa and the Mugabe regime. http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2007/jan/28/accounts.Zimbabwenews.

You do know that the reason HSBC brought Midland was that it was in financial trouble?

I did like their old logo though..
