I usually use out of date eggs to bake. If I don't want something to eat now I usually make cake sponges and freeze them. They're fine for using in puddings etc although probably a little bit dry to defrost and eat as cake.

They should be fine - date on an egg is a best before not a use by - just means they won't be as tasty. Probably won't be as nice for something like poached egg but fine for baking where you don't taste it so much

I agree with the other posters.

I've used eggs 3 weeks out of date, lots of times!

Well, first time posting in here, but having just made some cakes and muffins using eggs with a December 06 date on I can safely say that I am still alive and am not posting from 'the other side'! :D

Load of old baloney this date stuff - like beard0609 says, no dates on them when they come out of the chickens @rse! Crack em, smell em and then throw or use depending on the smell :D

Lovely cakes they were too :D
  • Hi,

I had 4 eggs in the fridge that went out of date on saturday 25th. On monday when i got back from my weekend away I thought 'they will be OK I will hard boil them for sarnies'. So I did. This was 27th.

Oops then I forgot about them! They are still in the fridge in their shells hard boiled.

Bear in mind today is the 30th and I am pregnant would you eat them for lunch in a sandwich mixed up with salad cream yum yum.

  • I would put them in a big container of cold water. If they float to the top then they are off. I regularly eat out of date stuff but you are wise to be careful when pregnant. If in doubt, chuck it (pardon the pun!)

There's a brilliant fresh egg test link (below) which will let you know the state of your eggs in terms of freshness...

    Erm... nope :o

    Silly me.

But next time you're worried about eggs - you can test them first.

    Sorry.

I always keep my eggs in the fridge and never worry about use by dates - I just check them with the float test if they've been in there a while.

    Edit: here ya go...
