Trying to concieve 12+M !!!

AF arrived as usual on Monday. We've decided, as we have been trying for 18months now with no joy to go and have some tests. We had fertility treatment 10 years ago which resulted in DS1, so will go back to the same doctor. I am concerned that although I still seem to have a regular cycle, maybe I'm just too old to conceive again. Whilst I didn't feel old at only just 38 when we started trying again, now that 40 isn't far off, I'm starting to worry.
HI Nicki, I was 40 in February and I'm beginning to worry that I'm passed it too !!!
We've got an appointment next week at the fertility clinic, with a view to starting IVF, so I will know more then, but I'm very aware that time is running out .
Good Luck & super sticky baby dust to us all.0 -

Thanks nottslass. I phoned this morning and also have an appointment for next week, for some preliminary investigations. My last two AFs have been very short and light (only a couple of days each) although still very regular so I do wonder whether I am perhaps at the beginning of the menopause, although I haven't had any other symptoms, other than not being able to conceive.0 -
No, that is it - any possibility of IVF is off. I am not going to be punched with needles! !
Honest, honest, honest - it really isn't so bad - and I HATE needles!
You don't necessarily have to have injections all the way - you can 'downreg' by sniffing stuff 3 times day, and only have injections to 'stimulate' and the final one to trigger ovulation.
I couldn't do the sniffing thing as I get quite a lot of nasal conjestion (allergic rhinitis) and I can't even sniff stuff like vicks for colds as it goes down my throat and makes me feel or be sick (sorry if TMI!) so I went with the jabs for the whole lot.
I got my DH to do them - "darling it would be a good idea - it will make you feel more involved in the whole process!" (who was I trying to kid - NO WAY I can stick needles into myself!). They go in the lower tum, at the side, and I don't look! Rubbing an ice-cube on the spot beforehand helps too.
We actually had more trouble with the 'pen thingy' which we had for the stimming jabs, as DH found it harder to get a grip on than the traditional syringe thing we had for the downregging ones.
The last jab - the one to trigger ovulation, does sting a bit, but other than that I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the whole process was, and how we slipped into the routine of doing them last thing every night.

Thanks!!!! Anyway, I am on CD 17 today and I am sure I have ovulated (both temp shift and EWCM -sorry, tmi...) and I am in that time of the month called 'pregnant until proven otherwise'...
Ok, this month I am trying to tell myself that I am NOT pregnant until proven otherwise, but I am so hopeful!!!!! I got a bit of cramps today and some pain on the sides of my boobs (ok, I can't call that pain - more like discomfort...). I just want to get done and over!!! (And most of all I want my year of work - I have told my OH that it is non-negotiable!)Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
Its interesting to see what people will and won't do to get pregnant.
First time round I did everything medically recommended however uncomfortable or unpleasant. So did clomid, lap and dye, ovaries drilled, IVF drugs by injection, IUI and strict diets and vitamin supplements. I remember being really upset half way through IVF when my sil who had a child already but was having trouble conceiving her second, phoned me to ask about clomid then said she wouldn't take it because of the side effects on her, yet still wanted me to commiserate with her fertility problems. Also with a colleague who was very very overweight but refused to lose any weight even though she was told that IVF would not succeed due to her size (she must have weighed at least 20 stone) and would not be offered to her until she tried to lose at least some weight. She felt it was unfair I was having it when she couldn't. Don't get me wrong I know losing weight is not easy (and I myself lost 3 stone while suffering from PCOS so know the struggle that can be) but its nothing compared to the discomforts of some of the other procedures.
So the question really is: what wouldn't you do to get pregnant, assuming it was legal and recommended by your doctor, and why not?0 -

To be honest I'd do anything, however hard or painful it may be - I know that with my age and finances we can realistically have only have one attempt at IVF,so would endure anything that is medically recommended in order to maximize our chances.
Today I received the HFEA guide to infertility and at first glance it looks to be a great guide - it covers everything from treatment options to what questions to ask your doctor. Its available free from www.hfea.gov.uk (you can also download it and print it out )0 -
Me too! Id try just about anything to have No 2 - I have had IVF 3 times, and I have needles - the nurse told me to scratch the skin several times in the injection site and you wouldnt feel it - she was right!!
By the way, at 39 Im another one who feels like it might all be a bit too late, but my nurse at the clinic did say that in another 5 years it might be a bit of a problem but I should be ok with persistence at the moment. So, I feel relatively reassured as they have seen scans, blood tests etc so know about my own situation.

I am really scared of needles - I basically freeze and stop breathing when I have to get them (I am fine to take blood from vein, but don't do muscle injections). That is why I don't think I could cope with any injections in my stomach - my OH would have to do them for me. And I suppose, he would be fine. He used to volunteer for red cross many years ago and would know how to do things... That would be his part of getting involved...Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

Hi ladies!
Kept my job on Tuesday :j so that was good news. Glad I haven't got to put this ttc malarkey on hold, seeing as though it is not proving to be easy like I thought it would.
Got the results of my blood test (from CD2) was for LH levels (I think) and the result was "normal - no further action", so that was good. Got to go for another one on CD23 (next Wed) to see if I ov this month. I wouldn't mind if I did but still didn't fall pg this month because then I would know things are working at least some of the time but will just have to wait and see.
I am racking my brains to think of something I wouldn't do to have a baby and can't think of any at the moment, I am a bit of a wuss though so I am sure something will come to mind.
Hopefully ginvzt, if it came to it you would be able to bite the bullet and have the jabs, it would be worth it in the end hopefully. But hey, it might not even come to that so don't worry about it yet!
And nottslass, thanks for that link, will have a look at that later.
Love :A and babydust/glue to all!

Hi everyone,
Well as a 39 (soon to be 40) year old woman, who has been ttc since January 2006, I always said I didn't think I could go through IVF. Since getting so much bad news along the fertility route (my ovulation seems below average, OH has probs too), we are starting to reconsider as we don't think there is likely to be any other way.
I am annoyed with myself that we didn't do anything earlier. Because my Mum took a long time to conceive, I didn't think it was a problem. Of course, my Mum was ten years younger than me when she started trying, I am now two years old than she was when she had her third child.
I guess its a lesson to be learned but it does make you wake up.
Have a good day. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
