I only copied a comment from the American discussion site. No idea how accurate it is, but it is intriguing don't u think?
The IT System I support (off ill today) works in terms of the EPOCH date also
There are loads of converters online

Looks like they found the best way of doing things, well done to LHW0 -

Some guy on the FT site reckons this is how the Number system works. See below...
....................................................................
ok...I'm a computer nerd and when I saw the registration number I knew immediately what it was..so here it goes.
that's basically standard unix time measured since january 1970 by the second.
Since then until October 23rd 2008, 14:00 UTC there were : 1224770400 seconds
If you received a number lower than that..it won't be valid.
The closest your reservation is to that number, the highest your odds are in having secured a room.
cheers

This makes sense. Go to http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm type in your confirmation number and see if it matches the time you submitted your form. Mine does!0 -
Mistake, please ignore0

I will stick my neck out and say that people will have the same reference which is why your "unique" reference is Email * Ref No.
Given what I've said about EPOCH date above.
Anyone submitting at the same second will have the same reference.
We are getting into techy stuff here0 -
think that wise pot has cracked it. Mine would definately appear to match up with the time I submitted it. Bit later than I had first thought though so maybe not so luckyThis is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

yeah that makes sense.
i wonder how many people entered within the first 5 minutes... it would be interesting to know.0 -
I do not think anybody will have the same ref number as maybe they started the applications at 1224770400 which was 3pm and each application went up in numerical order not by the second.0
