Some guy on the FT site reckons this is how the Number system works. See below...
....................................................................
ok...I'm a computer nerd and when I saw the registration number I knew immediately what it was..so here it goes.
that's basically standard unix time measured since january 1970 by the second.
Since then until October 23rd 2008, 14:00 UTC there were : 1224770400 seconds
If you received a number lower than that..it won't be valid.
The closest your reservation is to that number, the highest your odds are in having secured a room.
cheers

what the number means

Just emailed Claudia.
My message:
Hi Claudia,
Thought i'd drop you a quick email to congratulate your company on the 1928 offer. Everyone is normally quick to complain but not so quick to compliment. I had absolutbly no problems with your website this time. The form was easy to fill out and submitted first time no problems.
Regards,
Gaz Jones (although I used my real name ;P)
Got this reply minutes later:
Dear Gazza,
Thank you so much for your very kind email. What a relief! I really appreciate your taking the time to write. All the best, Claudia
I think perhaps a few more should email her saying well done. As I said in my email everyones too quick to complain and not quick enough to complement where due. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -

It also means that some of us will have the same number if we submitted at the same time, so lengthening the odds!0 -
That's an interesting response, which explains why some people had the same number - they submitted at exactly the same moment.
A good way of measuring who was first, but I assume they will have another internal way of identifying order of submission.0 -

Can you post her e-mail address Gaz, odds of finding it amongst all these pages are slim for me! Great idea. Good for you.0 -
Did anyone read the t&cs on the form page? Just desperately curious now to find out what I've agreed to!0

hang on thats the same quote as the one above...???
If its true then its great for me - but why Jan 1970 and what about all the people who are claiming to have got LESS than 400?
can your sources be trusted, shropsboy?0 -
looking at the confirmation page, the next thing we get is a confirmation email (if successful). that's all we need (plus id). just take it to the hotel and pay at check in...which means there will probably be a lot of no-shows if people get dates they don't actually want.
So in theory, the occupancy rates of these rooms may end up being quite low, even though cheap rooms were offered. A win/win for the hotels as they can sell them on at full price.0 -
