people not understanding 1p starts

I am collecting a set of books for someone , they are all cheap and I have already bought several for 1p on Amazon (£2.76 including p and p). However in the past few days I have put bids in on 1p starts from newbie sellers on ebay most of which have actual postage of around £1.63-£1.80 stated..and I have now started to win a few at between 1p and 51p.

I know the sellers are going to take a loss on them and have half expected emails saying they can't sell, or the book has been lost but so far nothing at all from any of them.

These are very popular books, there are hundreds of copies listed and they mainly go unsold on ebay, I used to warn people through a throw away account if I saw them with these 1p starts but having had abuse back I decided to stop.

Is it normal for newish sellers (all between 8-32 feedback) not appreciate that they might sell at their 1p start?

I wouldn't let it bother you.

If they cant be bothered to do a bit of research and see how much things are going for before selling them then that's there problem.

Not being funny but i'm sure you can think of far better things to do with ur time as well.
  • It's possible that some of these sellers just want to make sure their books find a new home, and consider any money they make to be a bonus rather than the purpose of the exercise.

I've bought several pet items for 99p and FREE POSTAGE! I assume the buyers hope that they will sell for more. Their loss is my dog's gain!

Some people don't really care. I for example would be glad to get rid of stuff I don't want and I get my postage for free through work so don't lose out. I really wouldn't waste your time, it's really none of your business. Some people give their stuff away on freecycle etc...so this is really not much difference.

I can fully understand something wanting to go to a good home, but to lose money on the sale is what intregues me.

A 1p start and £1.63 for postage will lose the seller 31p listing fees and paypal fees) and that doesn't include the costs of wrapping and evelopes.

Oh well, my gain I suppose, I've just found another one with only £1 1st class postage stated (It will cost £1.63 second class) and 49p start price with less than a day to go.

It's not necessarily that they don't understand, maybe they just don't care. I wouldn't have to pay for envelopes or postage therefore it would only cost me the insertion fee.

Jvic28 - Your company gives you free packaging and postage for personal items being sold on ebay? Not bad at all.

Yeh, it's the only perk I get. I don't get any paid overtime even though I'm expected to do oevrtime, there isn't a bonus or incentive scheme for me, no scope for promotion or payrises, so they allow me to put the odd item in the post. Still think it's not bad at all?? He He!
