Is rapeseed better for you than olive oil?
Why is it so cheap then?
The Italians & Greeks seem to live in healthy old age on olive oil.
It's cheap because it's easy to grow and press. Has lots of omega 3 or 6 in it I think. You can't use olive oil for frying as it has too low a burning temp. I use it a lot for dishes where olive oil wouldn't work.

I use a drizzle of olive oil for frying, no problems.0 -

I don't deep fry & I use a contact grill for steaks & meat & things like that.0 -
I think I read that rapeseed oil is high in monounsaturated fat, and has less saturated fat and more omega 3 than olive oil (I may be wrong though).
Tesco & Asda's own brand veg oil is rapeseed oil. I don't know anything about oil making but maybe rapeseed is easier to grow and process than olives and that's why it's cheaper?Dum Spiro Spero0 -
I bought some splendid organic, pressed by hand by fairies (or somesuch) rapeseed oil and it was OK but I forgot it and when I found the bottle this week and tried it again it had gone all rancid and nasty. Also it was really bright yellow, and made anything cooked with it yellow too.
I use olive for almost everything (don't deep fry ever and only occasionally fry at all) but do have either groundnut or sunflower if I'm - say browning meat for a stew - and know that the taste of the (more expensive) olive will just be lost. I make vinaigrette with half olive and half groundnut as my olive oil is just too strongly flavoured otherwise. But it's lovely for drizzling and things you really want that olivey taste in.0 -
Made the hairy bikers fool proof mayonaise.

Its disgusting
I think I may have put a little too much French mustard in (I didn't use a measuring spoon) & its a funny NOT mayonaise colour.
PLUS I used olive oil instead of sunflower oil (as its better for you, I try only to use olive oil).
What did I do wrong?
Plus I just wasted nearly half a litre of EVOO & 3 large free range eggs:mad:0 -
It's the olive oil Mrs E. It is really strong in mayo especially if you use extra virgin. If you are used to Hellmann's then a mayo made with all olive oil will be unpleasant. I speak from experience, I too have wasted a lot of evoo making mayo that no-one could eat. I decided in the end that it was one instance when it wasn't money-saving to make your own.
I suggest you either use all groundnut or sunflower oil, or a mix of one of those with olive oil. Or try one of those lighter olive oils.0 -
Yep the recipe tells you to use sunflower oil for a reason, If I use evoo in mayo (rarely do as we use s little mayo) I use about a fifth of the total oilPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Olive oil is NOT healthier than other oils (as you've been told before).
You were also told not to use olive oil for mayo, especially extra virgin, when you last posted about this!
