This seems to work for any cold call:
Caller: bla bla bla
Me: Cold calls are illegal. What's the address of your head office?
Caller: silence or pardon?
Me: repeat question
Caller: puts phone down very fast

does anyone know how to stop those annoying recorded message phone calls coming in? I get at least 3-4 per day they usually start with "Are you aware..."

its really annoying and wasting my time!

I get a number of these calls from people with asian accents who strangely seem to have English names like Chris or John! No doubt they have been told to say that rather than give their real names.

My solution....I have one of those guns that emit a shreiking sound to frighten away cats from my garden. A quick squirt of that down the 'phone always results in an instant 'click' as the caller hangs up.

On my 'phone these calls usually indicated by 'out of area' on the display so I can have the gun in hand, waiting.

I just wished that the gun was as effective on cats....;)

I found telling any company to remove me did no good, I then logged all known offenders in my phone and used caller display for a time I ignore call that didnt work either. So I opted for a device called true call this has stopped me getting unsolicited calls and so far 100% success since March 2010. It may costs £80+ but now when I pick up phone I hear a small message from sender I can then choose to ignore using keypad or accept. Known friends and family can bypass this system if you want it too

A friend of mine sent me to this site. Its a recording of a guy so sick of sales calls that he decided to a play a joke with the guy that called him. V v v funny i am actually looking forward to the next time i get a call now!
Type in 'how to prank a telemarketer' into google and it shows up as the first result.

Tell the caller that you are recording the call. They soon hang up.

I believe that it is a requirement to tell the caller whenever you are using a recording machine, but he won't know if you don't actually have one.

This has always worked for us except in one case where the caller's English was so poor he disn't understand what i was telling him!

Caller: hello is Mr x there?
Me: Who are you?
Caller: Steve from xxx
Me: oh hello Steve, will you be my special friend?
Caller: Erm yes if you wish.
Me: Goodie I havn't had a special friend for a long time, my last one never came to me after they left hospital and my nurse told me I must never call them again. What did you say your name was?

For some reason they always hang up at this point.

I love getting cold calls but sadly they seem to have stopped I think they have eventually got sick of me playing games with them. My favourite game was to put them on hold but actually just start singing or humming down the phone, then occasionally stop to say your call is important and the home owner will be with you shortly then continue to sing or hum again. I kept a chap from a window company on hold for 4 minutes before he hung up which was a god send as I was running out of things to hum at the time.
