Ways to stop overseas sales calls discussion

You have to be in the right mood for this, but it can relieve a lot of stress.
1. When an unsolicited call comes, interupt the opening speil and ask what they are selling. - demand to be taken off their database.
2. They will deny selling anything and embark upon an explanation about conductng surveys, market research etc
3. Engage in a prolonged discussion about the nature of selling, the need to establish selling points, the relationship between the cold call and the final sale etc - this section has to be played by ear, but fundamentally involves an exercise in keeping the conversation going without at any time aknowledging any other truth than that you have been phoned because (s)he wants to sell you something.
4. Be polite and aknowledge that the caller is only doing their job, but that they need to understand the bigger picture.
5. If you want to escalate the entertainment, ask to speak to a superior as clearly the caller does not have authority to take decisions.
6. Talking to call centre managers is an entertainment next to none!
Using this tactic you cant loose, you retain control while you are talking, and if they hang up on you - then so much the better0 -
When I get these calls from overseas (usually India or somewhere like that) I answer the phone by saying 'Hello, Glasgow City Morgue, can I help you?'
That usually baffles them, it's just not so ggod if it's your Doctors Secretary calling about your appointment!:rotfl:
I answer with "Hello Middleton crematorium you kill'em we grill'em"
I don't have caller display so sometimes my gran gets it.0 -

Brilliant! I'm going to use that technique with Dunraven Windows. Pests!"Apart from the known and the unknown, what else is there?"

I have drastically reduced the number of unwanted calls ever since I started using my husband's refereeing whistle. I listen for a few minutes to make sure it isn't a call I want and then blow really hard. I have found this far more evective than paying to block calls especially as 'they' can only block calls which are made in UK and most annoying ones come from overseas.0

When someone rang to speak to the previous owner of our house, I said she doesn't live here anymore. The caller asked if I was a relative, I said no. They asked if I was the home owner I said no (we rent). She was very confused and then asked if I'm a relative again. This went on for a few minutes before she gave up and said bye.
I also get alot: "Is that/Can I speak to Mrs X" I say there isn't a Mrs X (me and my partner aren't married). That always throws them, especially as I don't offer anymore information.
I'm getting thoroughly fed up of these calls now and now answer and if no-one speaks in the first few seconds the phone goes down, unless it's late at night (past 8pm for me) then I ask why they are ringing and get mad saying they've woken my baby up- cheers my evenings up!

I've a cordless handset and I take it to a normal handset - placing mic to speaker on both creates a feedback loop.
Ask if you can give them some feedback then do!0 -
I actually quite enjoy some of these calls now, I like to play along with it, let them go through the whole script then ask how much are they going to pay me. Sometimes if I haven't time I just tell them stuff like I'm sorry, he was hacked to death in his bed by a madman, can I get him to phone you back. The ones that come up as International on the screen are the ones that do annoy me though as it's usually just a recording, so no fun in those ones at all0

I know I don't get asked so much now, but if and when they tell you that they will be recording the call for training and security purposes - Just tell them that it's not OK and that you are not willing to be recorded.
It throws them right off their script and usually ends the call.
The other one I try is to tell them there is someone at the door - just put the phone down, not hanging up and go off for a few minutes.
I did try this with a boiler room caller and he was still there 10 mins later,
So I just asked if it was hot in the boiler room, I think he got the message!
But if I get another call about my BT line, I think I'll scream!!!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't had one in years until last week when I moved back.
The company I paid the money to denied all knowledge of me until I moved the account - then they sent me a bill! You have to laugh.:rotfl:0 -
I got calls from 3 phone company, but was from some woman in India, a extremely heavy Indian accent that i could not understand, i eventually said i no longer use 3 broadband mobile and the calls stopped.Owed out = lots. :cool:0
