My son want to move back home, but he is arguing over how much rent to pay.He takes home appox £1400/month. I've told him his rent will include everything except phone bills, but says he only want to pay about £300/ month...Is that a fair rent??

Have a look on gumtree for what people will pay for a room in your area.
However, if he's already arguing with you about money....I'd be inclined to tell him to find somewhere else at that price
And by 'everything' do you mean laundry, cooking, food, cleaning?0 -
I would say yes only if he buys his food, does his washing, ironing, cleaning etc and pays his phone bill and any extra on the utilities. He will be saving a fortune!Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

Just out of curiosity, how old is he and how long ago did he leave hom? Why does he want to move back? Has he realised how expensive "real world" is?!0

Definitely check adverts in your local area (also try www.spareroom.co.uk), but unless you're in London £300 is usually about right. It's what I charge for a room rental here in Wales (inc bills), and also what I paid when I lived in an expensive part of Wiltshire.
As above, make sure he's clear on "self-service accommodation"!Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I had my brother come and live with us about 5 years ago and we charged him £80 per week. That included all utilities and food. He had to cook himself though, and do his own washing. He didn't use our phone as he used his mobile. He thought this was very steep but we told him that was it like it or lump it. It was a difficult family situation and the 6 months he stayed was the longest of my life. He was a very good lodger though but it strained our relationship to the limit and it hasn't fully recovered.
If my son wanted to do the same though I wouldn't hesitate. My own children will always be welcomed back home.Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0 -

I'd say at least £400 if you are including everything (apart from telephone)

Just been trying to work out what I would pay if I knock petrol and other things off what I spend on rent, food and bills etc. I reckon it to be approx £450 ...so I think £300 is a bargain! One day I will be out of my student debt, one day... :beer:0 -
Thanks for the replies, i think that the real world is catching up with him, he rents a flat for £675 plus all bills on top of that, so now he knows what its like...He's 24 years old so i think he want to come home to save some money....and have a lot of aruguments again..mmm cant wait.........0

He's paying £675 solely on rent without bills and he wants to pay you less than half of his rent amount, and include everything?!
He's having a laugh isn't he?
If it were down to me, I'd ask him to pay at least £400 a month.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
But it's not about that - you can't compare with living in a flat! If he's renting a room, let him a room at market rate. If he could rent a room from a stranger for £300, then he should be able to pay the same from his parent.
If he clearly can't afford a flat of his own, that's what he should be doing anyway - living in a shared house / flat or renting a room from a live-in landlord.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0
