Lol....this thread reminds me of what goes on in my son's primary school, where a rather astonishing number of the kids belive that the sort of person you are is defined by the label on your trainers. I had no idea that some people extended this concept to the labels on their baked beans, lol.

For the record, Hubby and I are academic types that live on one wage while I stay at home and look after the kids, the cats and the allotment. Money is not plentiful when there's six of you living on one wage, so I apply my brain to making the most of it while at the same time keeping our standard of living as high as possible. Why waste money on a label (food or trainers) if you can get the same quality and possibly even something better for your money without the brand name/"poshest" tag/or acceptable carrier bag? There are many consumer tests around that compare brands across stores and it's by no meants inevitable that the "luxury" brands win every time...in fact, quite the opposite. A truely wise shopper keeps an open mind, is always willing to try a new and promising looking item and reads the labels to get a grip on quality indicators like meat content and additives. Anyone who automatically reaches for the top end range in the supermarket because they belive the quality is superior should stop and have a look at the back of the packet. Yup, the value/discount lines often do have a less appealing ingredient list, but not always...sometimes the difference in price is entirely to pay for that word "Finest", have to say. Or one extra fashionable ingredient, which you may not even like. Or just because it comes in a fancier container, lol.

Of course, the best way to save money is to know how to cook and handle a wide range of ingredients, so that you're not tied into the concept of having to buy a lump of prime muscle meat and ready washed and prepared veg for a meal, or a ready prepared meal come to that. Then you can make the best of offers, seasonal ingredients and supermarket offers. Whatever the supermarket! I certainly was up at M&S when their £10 meal deal offer included these humungous Oakham chickens, for example, but this week we're be having a lot of veggie meals courtesy of Lidl half price fuit and veg week.

Oh, and carrier bag snobbery? Buy some robust non-supermarket ones and use these, then no-one will give a damm where you shop. I've gor a set of Liberty print ones I bought for 10p each 12 years ago when the local Liberty shut down. Vintage AND snob label...that's real class, surely????;)

    Well said

Have to say, I went to Sainsburys last night for a 'few bits', ended up coming to £30! I admit I was shocked!

Back to Tesco for the full shop I think.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

    I wouldn't dream of it

I think you will find its you been over stepping the mark & then editing it out.

You ARE a two faced git!

Seems like someone's losing her countenance, her manners, and the plot.

Anyway, this is the action which, after thorough rumination, due consideration and close examination, I have chosen to take:

    :rotfl:
    :rotfl:
    :rotfl:

I haven't edited out a thing, by the way. That's another :rotfl:.

    See you in Waitrose. :iloveyou:
  • Hi Everyone,

I dont know why I felt the need to reply to this thread but here goes. I only joined MSE a month or so ago and this is like the second post I have responded to. I am so shocked but all that I have just read.

I joined MSE as I am a 21 year old student in a lot of debt and thought that by joining this I may get some help of people that are in the same boat as me, so advice maybe and guidance on what to do and helpful tips.

I didnt realise that by joining MSE I would witness all of you people abuseing eachother and not only on this post. All of you seem to be what I would call grown up, your adults with children etc and you are all behaving like children with bickering and name callling, its disgusting, I still cant believe my eyes as to what I have just read. 3 grown adults in a heated argument which by the way wasnt very fair for 2 of you to gang up on 1.

What is the point in me joining this if this is what I have got to look forward to when I sign on.

    A very dissapointed Tiffany:confused:

    I Find Aldi great value.

Fruit and veg is excellent there, I have had
loads of cauliflower cabbage and broccoli that has lasted at least 10 days
    after buying it

and the fruit and veg offers they have for 39p etc are worth visiting for
    alone

the prices are between the value and brands range and really compete
with the supermarkets own version but Aldi tends to win most of the time

Not everyone is the same Mstiffany but you'll find abuse and name calling on any forum; after all everyone, is entitled to share their opinion, within reason, even though it's not always pleasant reading.

On the whole, we're a nice bunch - there are loads of long term members so we can't be that bad :D Infact there are loads of members, full stop :)

Try one of the other boards and see what's on offer there. When I first joined I only used the Travel, Grabbit and The Oldstyle boards but regularly pass through most of them now. I have saved loads and gathered lots of useful info.

Don't let these few posts put you off :)
