What's a good price for a ham hock? I noticed them in the farmer's market the other day - largeish, maybe around 1kg - for £2.95, but I've never seen them in my local supermarkets so I don't know if this is ok or overpriced. I'd probably want to boil it and then flake the meat off for a pie or quiche or something.2015 comp wins - £370.25
Recent wins: gym class, baby stuff
Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j0 -
Hope some one is out there just now, as I need a v quick answer.
I fancy prawns for my tea (now) have just taken them out of freezer.
Can I defrost them quick by putting them in hot/warm water/ or is that a no no0 -
I put them in a plastic bag in warm water and make sure they are eaten the moment they defrost. Haven't keeled over from food poisoning yet!I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0

They will defrost in you put them in a colander under running COLD water. No chance of heating them then so no chance of food poisoning.0

Defrost under cold water (that's what I used to do when I worked in restaurants) but don't do it for too long as they won't taste of anything.
If you're cooking them, add them frozen and they'll quickly cook through.0 -
Presumably if you do them in cold water IN the plastic bag they won't have all their flavour washed away!0

Hey all
Can anyone point me in the direction of a thread which has essential store cupboard ingredients?
I'm moving out of parents home next week and need to make a list of what essential stuff I need like seasoning, flour etc (I'm veggie if that makes a difference).
Also, if there are any other useful OS setting up home stylee threads too I'd be very grateful if someone can post link
TIA
